If you do then it’s the HDMI output from the box that has gone (common issue with Humax boxes).
I don’t think I have seen many reports of failed HDMI output; which Humax boxes do you think are affected by this problem?

I was leaning towards the brand new Seagate drive (Skylark – designed for AV usage)
Do you mean Skylark? Ther is certainly some positive experience reported for the Skyhawk.
only as I use the Hummy as a film store too (and the kids use the Media bit to watch a lot of films), and I’d need to re-create this each time on potentially time-limited older CEX HDDs. Is there any experience with the Skylark drives? I’d like another 3-5 years out of the unit if possible before buying something new.
Fair enough; I suggest buying from a supplier who will readily accept it back if it doesn’t fix the problem.
I’ll try cleaning the SATA connectors, but when I connected the existing HDD to my Linux PC yesterday, it wouldn’t even boot, let alone not recognise it – hence I thought it was a dud!
How did you connect it to the Linux PC?

My trusty 1tb 5000t has worked very well for nearly 7 years, but the HDD has stopped being recognised overnight. It works fine as a set top box still. I had an old 80GB sata drive which I swapped and was recognised, but wouldn’t format.
I think there have been some reports of the SATA connectors to the hard drive causing problems; you might want to check that they look clean and if not try and clean them.
My dilemma is:
Buy a second hand Seagate 1tb video drive from CeX for £13 which is likely to fail sooner rather than later as it will be the same vintage, then take advantage of their 5 year warranty.
I think that is the option I would go for.

I understand it to be a Humax ‘feature’ that formatting is always required when changing drives. (See 2nd para of my original post)
e.g.
drive A, remove A, replace A = OK no formatting required.
drive A, replace with B -> format*, remove B, replace A -> format*.
* These formats are required because this drive is not the same as the immediately previous drive.
It certainly is not the case that changing drives requires a format. The format option is only offered if the drive format is not what the Humax was expecting.

I had replaced the original (H) drive with my spare drive (S), which the Humax formatted because it was a new drive.
I have recently tried replacing (S) with the recovered (H) drive but the only option offered is to format it, so losing all recovered content.
So they have recovered the data but not the correct formatting, is that correct? What have the recovery company said about this?

My Humax 2000T disk (let’s call it H) became unreadable recently. A professional recovery outfit corrected it and also provided a clone disk and its contents on an external USB drive (E).
I happened to have a similar spare disk (S) which I installed in the Humax. I now know this was not a good idea because every time a drive, that is different to the removed drive, is installed the Humax insists on formatting it as a unix EXT3 drive.
Therefore, I could not reinstall the recovered drive (H) or its clone without loss of contents.
Why would installing drive (H) cause loss of content? Is it not formatted as EXT3?

Today, I’m getting a warning that there is a problem with the sites certificate?
I’ve noticed that the HTTPS:/ is crossed out.
I can only access the site by ignoring two warnings. The site is also labelled as having adult content !
I have noticed intermittent warnings of https not being available for some time. I think there is something not quite right at the server.

Anyone experienced the aura turning itself on randomly e.g. in middle of the night, during the day when noone around etc?
If so, any diagnosis of what caused it?
I’ve no pets or anything that could trigger the remote at these times.
I think that has happened to my box on a very small number of occasions. How often is it happening for you?

Why not ? What is streaming ?
You can only record content that is delivered via the TV aerial. Streamed content comes via the Internet.
Can you record it onto a usb flash drive ?
No.

If the Signal Strength is 100% this may well be the cause of the pixellation.
Buy a variable attenuator and wind down the signal strength to between 90 and 95% to see if this improves things, or to a level where the pixellation stops.
Signal Quality should ideally be 100%.
I agree, signal strength may well be saturating the tuners.

Thank you so much for your reply we are in the midlands and use the Sutton Coldfield transmitter and thought I needed a better Arial and fitted a digital Arial and now have 100%
Is that signal strength or signal quality?

Well, that’s been my habit for maybe 15 years or more, even with recent 4 and 8 TB drives which need overnight to complete.
I think of it as a break-in for all the internals, but particularly the read-arm servo.
It could indeed be pointless, but I’ve never had an HDD fail in what’s now over two decades, and more of them than I could count (with the exception of one WD 2.5″ after very few, occasional hours a couple of years back), and I have quite a few 500GB and 1TB Seagates, WD’s and Hitachis a decade or more old, with power-on hours of many years each, that still perform (and sound) like new when I occasionally use them as ‘scratch’ disks in SATA hot-swap or USB bays.
I have 40 years experience of using hard drives and I too have had very few failures, mainly in the early days when hard drives were not as reliable as they are today, and typically I have done nothing more than format the drive.

Thanks for your help. Looking at all the answers I think we are stuck with London local news unless we aim the aerial at another transmitter.
I now have the OPs full postcode and that does show a little bit of signal from the Bluebell Heath transmitter. It is a low signal but definitely worth talking to the aerial fitter to see whether he thinks it could be made to work.
