Very often Humax boxes use 5.25″ Seagate Pipeline Sata drives,
Surely you mean 3.5″ form factor?

I wondered, can I open up the Humax box and put in a larger capacity hard drive? 2TB preferably, but even 1TB would be an improvement. Is there anything I need to know ie, make / model of drive, should I clone the removed 500GB one to the new one before installation, does firmware require upgrading? Basically, anything and everything about this I should know – if it’s even possible at all!
I have fitted larger hard drives to various Humax boxes but not to an FVP-4000T. I would expect that the process would be to buy a suitable hard drive; ideally you want a drive designed for PVR usage. I don’t know what is fitted as standard to an FVP-4000T but I would suggest opening the box to have a look and then buy a larger capacity drive from the same series. I would expect when you start the box after fitting the new drive it will offer to format it for you and away you go. I would expect that the existing firmware will be OK but 2TB may well be the largest capacity drive you can fit.
Maybe someone else here has actually done it and will post further details. If not let us know how you get on. Good luck.

I thought I would be able to get all catch up.not just BBCi player and youtube. Don’t think there is anything else I can do.
The easiest way to get a wider range of catch up options would be to buy a Now TV box http://www.nowtv.com/tv-box This will give you free access to the main TV channels catch up services without subscription; you can also get access to a wider range of content by buying a subscription but that is optional.

Thanks I have done a factory reset and can now see one wifi network although not my own despite strong signal.
What channel is your network using?

I’ve had several experiences where PC disks showed massive SMART errors but the only indication of problems was very slow access to the files onboard, leading me to believe that Windows is a lot more tolerant of disk errors than your typical domestic media device.
I don’t think it is to do with Windows. I believe that it is because of different design philosophies between PC drive firmware and AV drive firmware. PC drives will prioritise data integrity and will make multiple attempts to recover data from marginal sectors; AV drives will prioritise smooth playback and will make minimal attempts to recover data from marginal sectors.

ParticipantIf you are going to the trouble of putting the drive in a PC I would suggest the sensible thing to do is to look at the SMART data for the hard drive which will give you a good (but not infallible) idea of the health of the drive.

I’ve deleted a few channels – just wondering if anybody knows how to undelete them because they don’t show up on any of the lists anymore.
I think you will need to retune the Humax.

I have an old TV which has a single scart socket. I connected my Humax set top box to this (the Humax 2000T also only has one scart socket). I have just bought an LG dvd player which was supplied with a HDMI cable. I have connected this to the Humax with the HDMI cable but when I turn on the DVD player, nothing displays on my TV.
Sorry but that won’t work; the HDMI socket on the Humax is for output only. IF you want to get the DVD player working then you will need an HDMI to SCART converter eg Link to ebay and a SCART switch Another link to ebay

My new Humax box automatically turns on my tv on start up, but it doesn’t turn it off again. How can I correct this, it would be good to lose the tv remote.
Start by telling us which model of Humax box you have purchased.

PS Martin types faster than I do
Given that there is nine hours difference in the posting time I suspect my (increasingly dodgy) typing skills are not the issue

ParticipantThe only thought that occurs to me is to check carefully that there are no other remote controls in the room that are transmitting continuously (maybe because they have book on them or are wedged in a chair for instance).

Do you have any views on doing a disk cleanup (which I think of as being a de-frag).
I am not clear exactly what the disk cleanup does (it is unlikely to be a defrag as the Linux file systems tend not to be significantly affected by fragmentation) but it is worth trying.

Symptoms do seem to indicate a major problem with the hard disk.
I agree; I suggest Mrs B carries out the reset ASAP and assuming it doesn’t fix the problem chases John Lewis hard to get the problem resolved

There are old entries pointing to ‘Betelgeuse-Observatory…’ but this is inaccessible.
I think I have a copy stashed away; send me a PM with an email address and I will email it to you.

My worry is if i am on holiday and i have set my box to record programmes over the time im away from home surely if the box has powered down it will not record my scheduled recordings.
It should make recordings from standby, just like every other Humax box NB putting it into standby is not powering down; it is putting it into a state where power consumption is reduced. If it doesn’t wake up to record then it is faulty.
