    My 2000T

Firstly can I check that you do have an HDR-2000T because you have posted in the HDR-FOX T2 section of the Forum? I ask because it would be much easier to fix the problem if it was an HDR-FOX T2.

has just given me message that the HDD needs reformatting I have about 500GB+ of recordings, what can i do to save them

Ive been switching box off every night at plug as I thought that best, however reading messages here, I should leave it on all the time on standby.

Were you putting it into standby, waiting for the drive to stop spinning and then turning it off or were you just turning it off. If you just turn it off then because the box is almost always recording for the time shift capability then you are seriously at risk of corrupting the file system; you are correct that putting it into standby is the way it is designed to operate and it uses less than 0.5W whilst in standby.

Any suggestions as to how I get my recording back

It depends what has happened. There are two main possibilities: either the logical file system is damaged which should be repairable but will require some technical knowledge or the hard drive itself has a physical which again might be repairable or might need a new hard drive. How old in the Humax and how important are the recordings?

I have just bought a dongle but have never used one before

Sadly I don’t think that will help with this problem.

Is it because the model is old and worn out? something more technical?

I doubt that it is the Humax that is at fault. I assume you are using a dongle? It could be the dongle or it could be something else has changed reducing the strength of the wireless signal. Which USB port do you have the dongle plugged into? Have you tried the other USB port?

Since receiving a firmware update to 1.01.18 my Humax 2000T now stutters on sound/vision even though signal strength and quality is almost 100%.

I aggree with Graham. If signal strength is being reported as near a 100% then I think your problem will not be anything to do with the software version (which was only a minor update to keep iPlayer working). Too high a signal strength can saturate the tuners and produce exactly the symptoms you are describing. If you have an amplifier in the system then either remove it or reduce the gain. If you don’t have an amplifier then buy a variable attenuator Link to ebay and reduce signal strength to somewhere around 80%.

The Software Version is UKTFAC 1.01.16 and the Loader Version is UKTFAC 1.04

I think you need to update the software to 1.01.18 from https://uk.humaxdigital.com/support/?product_id=794&curr_page=sw_release (note that the update instructions are at the bottom of the page).

the poor handling of FAT32 disk drives compared to the H3 is annoying

Could you give a little more detail about this problem please?

I bought a Freesat HDR 1100 S 500gb, and it worked well for a few weeks. However, for the past week, I have been unable to access any on demand services just screen message

You haven’t said who provides your broadband? If it is Sky then it is a known issue that is being worked on.

Hello, and many thanks, does nothing if you press the stop button I am afraid, just carries on recording.

Then I suspect they are pressing the wrong button or the remote is faulty. I have never known pressing the stop button to fail to bring up a dialog requesting whether you actually want to stop the recording (and if there is more than one recording taking place allowing you to choose which to stop).

    Any other suggestions appreciated.

Ring up Humax support and talk to them and see if they will offer you the £55 exchange deal.

What if you start an immediate recording and then decide you don’t want it and wish to stop the recording straight away ????

Press the stop button (white square two below the REC button).

I was wondering if I could connect it to my Dell laptop and use it as an external hard drive?

I have a slightly different view to Graham. Yes you can connect it to your laptop by opening the 9300 and removing the hard drive. You would need to buy a USB 2.0 3.5″ SATA hard drive enclosure eg Link to ebay seller to hold the drive and then let Windows reformat the drive. The thing to be wary of is that, as Graham says, a drive optimised for PVR usage optimises playback performance over data integrity so will have less data retries than a normal PC drive so don’t store mission critical data on it.

Do you get partial recordings or no recording at all?

Right, I was mistaken, Vintage TV is the same, it looks as if certain channels are blocked for copying purposes. Has anyone else found this.

Forces TV is broadcast on the COM8 HD multiplex and Vintage TV on the COM7 HD multiplex. I would guess that the programs are marked as HD in the metadata (even though the content may only be SD) and this is restricting the ability to copy NB only a guess.

I’d only say that as far as I know there are no moving parts in an SSD so that leaves us with the roughly level playing reliability field of hard wired components.

No that is not correct. SSD drives have a finite lifetime based on the amount of data written and this does not apply to conventional hard drives. This lifetime has steadily increased as the design of the flash RAM used in SSD drives has improved as has the wear levelling technology in the latest controllers. The last time I did the calculation a Samsung SSD (which currently tend to have the longest guaranteed lives) would have a life of about 5 years if used for about 12 hours a day in a PVR with what I estimated as a typical recording usage.

Also, with the inevitable increase (I hope) of tuners then simultaneous read/write perfromance will start to suffer more on HD compared to SSD

The last time I looked at the specifications I think the conventional hard drives could cope with ten simultaneous streams which still gives a fair bit of head room; the usual limitations on a PVR performance at the moment are the CPU and amount of RAM not the hard drive.

In my view it is entirely feasible to use an SSD in a PVR but it will cost significantly more (at the moment) and the only advantage will be the complete absence of noise. In the future I am quite sure we will all have SSDs in PVRs but I suspect it is still a few years away.
