Would the reset to factory settings not do the reformat?

If I remember correctly there is a format hard drive option on the reset to factory settings which defaults to off and needs to be set to on to format the hard drive.

Also if the hard drive needs to come out i don’t have access to a computer running Linux but i assume it shouldn’t be too hard a job to take it to a computer repair shop and they should be able to do it?

That sounds like a reasonable thing to do.

I’m also able to to play old recordings.

I’ve done a factory reset but this hasn’t rectified the problems.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Based on the symptoms my first guess would be that the file system has gone read only because of a corruption. The easy way to fix it is to format the hard drive but this will of course delete existing recordings. The alternative is to take the hard drive out and attach it to a computer running Linux and use file system repair tools.

Ex TV Engineer for 30 years. at first I thought was my antenna .. but signal and signal quality is 100% ..

Probably not related to your problem but a signal strength of a 100% may be too high and cause tuner saturation and poor picture quality. My advice is to aim for a signal strength of 85%.

There will be no fix. Just a long time cynical Aura owner!

But Trog is reporting that he is no longer seeing the problem which to me suggests a change at the transmitter hence no fix needed (assuming that whatever change was made at the transmitter is made at all other transmitters).

Yes, I know what you can do from the box menus, I have tried everything that a normal user could do, I was hoping for help from someone who knows these boxes inside-out, hardware/software/diagnostic levels.

Sorry but I don’t think that level of expertise exists in the user community for the FVP-4000T/FVP-5000T. There is a lot of knowledge about the earlier HDR-FOX T2, partly because it was possible to access the Linux operating system and develop custom firmware additions. There is a long thread over at hummy.tv on diagnosing a problem with the hard drive starting up which might give a few clues; see https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/start-up-fails-when-hdd-connected.10164/ The problem was traced to a small faulty capacitor and a fair number of people have reported success after replacing the specific capacitor. However it took a lot of time and knowledge to identify the problem.

I have done a factory default and reformat although I have no idea if the hard drive has been suitably prepared for recording as there is very little system status information in this respect.

You can reformat the drive from Settings>Storage

fast play now won’t work properly on some channels, most notably so far is itv3.

Please can you describe exactly what you are seeing when you attempt “fast play” on ITV3?

So, what would I need to do to make sense of the HDD using disc management tools on a Windows machine

On my Windows 11 computer > Right click on the Start button> Select Disk Management>

Wait while it loads the information and then see if the USB attached hard drive shows up.

Alternatively you could download the free Crystal Diskinfo and look at the SMART data, it isn’t easy to interpret but if you post the “Raw values” of attributes 05 (reallocated sector count), C5 (Current pending sector count) and C6 (uncorrectable sector count) I can give you an opinion on the health of the drive.

or would an apple macOS be better?

Possibly but I am afraid I have no experience with Apple kit.

Can anybody suggest what is the minimum number of channels to be removed? Has anybody experimented with doing a manual tune and omitting one of the multiplexes?

What I mean by access is plug in into the PC using the USB interface to see if the PC will discover it as an accessible drive.

But are you doing that using File Explorer or are you using the Disk management tools to look at the partition table?

No it’s not in warranty, I didn’t know what to expect, but have just tried to access the drive through a PC using a SATA caddie and couldn’t access it.

What do you mean by “access the drive”? If you have a Windows computer you won’t be able to connect to the content on the drive without special software but you should be able to see the partition table.

Good luck to anyone trying to explain whats going on to the BBC transmitter complaints system.

It simply reports that there are no problems with the transmitter.

The BBC website says “Please use our BBC Reception Advice website where you will find a Problem Assistant tool that will show any faults at your local transmitter, latest engineering news and offer further help and support. You should be able to solve most problems using this tool, but if not, it will also offer you a way to contact us.” So there should be a way to make a text reply?

    Idle (Bradford).

It does seem to be a problem affecting a number of people with FVP 4000T/5000T boxes but for others it is working correctly. We need to try and find a common factor. Could anybody else who is suffering with this problem tell us which transmitter they receive from please?
