    Hello People,

    Can somebody advise me as to what may be the best file type to use for movies stored on a portable USB disc, attached to my HDR1000 box. I am interested in quality. I understand ratios might be an issue too. Thanks for your help anyone who replies.

    Hi welcome to the forum

    The boxes native container is transport stream (.ts), .mp4 files also work.

    Other containers like MKV will also most likely work subject to compliant contents.

    Don’t expect AVI support.

    Known supported video

    mpeg2 576i (all usual broadcast resolutions), 1080i (1440 x 1080 and 1920 x 1080 25fps) and 1080p at 24 (23.976) fps (Blu-ray standard Full HD) – tested up to 35Mbps, 25fps, 50fps. 1080p60 probably works but never tested it

    mpeg4/H264/AVC 5761, 1080i, 1080p24, 1080p25 and 1080p50

    Audio Mp2, ac3 2.0 or 5.1 and aac 2.0 or 5.1. DTS is not supported or passed through to an AV amp.

    Note 24p (23.976) requires your display is 1080p24 compliant for smooth playback.

    Great many thanks Graham for your super fast response. I shall transcode my DVDs into one of the above mpeg2 formats, transfer to my portable hard drive and then watch and enjoy. Just waiting (with some excitement) for my box to arrive today

    The .vob files in a Video_Ts folder are already compliant (mpeg2 576i) you just need to join them together and change the container. TSmuxerGUI should do this very quickly. Add the first .vob. Drag the rest from windows explorer to the tsmuxer join button. Output as .ts.

    Once Again Graham many thanks. Your suggestion for tsMuxeR has saved me hours of work. You might also wish to know that I am doing all of this for my disabled daughter whos only form of entertainment is pre-school stuff like Charlie and Lola. So you sir have made a little girl very happy and me as a dad pleased. Well Done :-)
