Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me?

I have a Humax 5000T and I’m wanting to transfer some recordings to an external hard drive. I contacted Humax and they suggested that I buy a ‘WD Elements Easy add-on desktop storage’ as they had tested it with the 5000T. Before I actually purchase it, I was wondering if someone could answer a couple of questions for me?

1 – I have a recording on the 5000T which is 8 hours long, am I able to transfer that to the external hard drive?

    and

2 – Once I have transferred the recordings over to the external hard drive would I be able to watch the recordings from the external hard drive on the tv or would it just be for the computer?

    Thank you

Providing the USB Hard drive is formatted NTFS or Ext3 then yes; the link you provided says it is NTFS formatted out of the box. Also the recording must be SD for the encryption to be removed. HD recordings will copy but only play back on the Humax.

You would need to tell us about the TV. If it is a smart TV then there is a reasonable chance it will play as is and if it doesn’t play then it can probably be manipulated into a format that will play.

I’ll make a further observation. It does seem from various reports that the side USB port is not very fast when saving files – in fact a small clip from a radio channel can take hours to save. Try using the back USB port to save your 8 hour file, otherwise it maybe sometime next year or later before the file is saved!

When playing back the side USB port is fast enough.

Thank you so much Martin & EEPhil.

From someone who isn’t very tech savvy, you’ve both helped me with your advice and answers to my questions. I’ve now ordered the ‘WD Elements Easy add-on desktop storage’ so fingers crossed when it arrives I’ll be able to transfer the 8 hour recording and free up some space on the 5000T!

Is it an SD (Standard Definition) recording? If so it should be very straightforward but be patient as it is a lot of data to transfer through a USB connection. As a matter of interest do you have a PC running Windows 10?

Apologies it’s taken this long to reply to you.

Yes, thankfully it’s a SD recording. Yes I do have a PC running windows 10.

If your FVP is connected to your network and on the FVP you have the Network Server set to on (Advanced settings). Then if you use Windows Explorer on the PC and look in the “This PC” section you should see the FVP listed (something like Humax_FVP DMS) right click on it, select Open and then navigate My Contents> Recordings and then after a short delay you should get a list of all recordings. Find the recording and right click and select Copy and then select where you want it copied to. The advantage of doing it this way is that it is much quicker than copying to an attached USB devices.

    Hi Martin.

We’ve tired both ways of transferring recordings from the 5000T.

We plugged the ‘WD Elements Easy add-on desktop storage’ into the back of the Humax box and it started to transfer the recording. However it stopped and only transferred 19 minutes of a 8 hour recording.

We then tried the computer way. However when we try and play the recording we’re getting the message

    ‘Missing codec

Choose something else to play. This item is in a format we don’t support.

I have no idea what I’m doing wrong 😥

I don’t think you are doing anything wrong. I haven’t got much experience of USB downloads, hopefully somebody else can help. As regards the ‘missing codec’ message was this trying to play it on the PC? If so what software? If it is a Microsoft product then you can download extra codecs. Alternatively download the free VLC player that should play it without any fuss, see https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en-GB.html

I can’t see an obvious reason for the USB method not working unless the format of the external drive can’t cope with the size of the file, or the Humax crashed during the transfer. For it to stop at 19 minutes is strange. Are you certain the recording is SD? Can the 19 minutes saved to USB drive be played?

When we were receiving the ‘missing codec’ message that was when we were trying to view the recording on the PC using the software Film & TV through Windows 10. We then downloaded VLC Player, we then found the recordings through the PC. We right clicked and opened with VLC. The computer then downloaded the recording and played through the VLC player (the full 8 hour recording). This is now where we’re stuck. We don’t know now how to transfer the recording from VLC to the external hard drive.

The external hard drive is NTFS formatted out of the box so we didn’t do anything to it. Yes completely 100% sure the recording is SD as the channel we recorded does not have a HD version. Yes, the 19 minutes which saved to the Hard drive was able to be played back on the TV.

The fact that the 19 minutes played seems to suggest the codec error is a red herring. Somehow the copying via the network is mangling the file. You could try saving the file a second time to the USB drive and see if it fails again. (Best to rename or delete the file on the USB drive first). If that doesn’t work, all is not lost but the only other methods I know to copy an SD file to your computer (and then the USB drive) are not straightforward.

This sounds to me as though you have played the file using the DLNA server on the Humax. You said you had previously managed to download the file; what file extension does it have? My test copies are shown as .mpeg. Use Windows Explorer to locate the file, right click from the “Open with” option on the popup men select VLC and it should start to play.

I think you are getting confused. The OP says they played back the 19 minutes on the TV. The attempt to play back the recording transferred over the network was on the PC. On my PC I can play back the downloaded files using Microsoft applications but I have at some point downloaded the Microsoft MPEG-2 extension which may be the key to the problem; see https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/mpeg-2-video-extension/9n95q1zzpmh4?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Somehow the copying via the network is mangling the file.

I haven’t seen any evidence of that.
