InactiveOk…..
So it appears that Freeview HD sound
is encoded in HE-AAC format.
Is that correct or is it now in DD, DD+, Dolby Pulse or something else?
Is AD still the reason that HE-AAC is used?
Any transcoding mods planned?
Will the Humax Aura be upgraded by a firmware update and thus able to output DD, DD+ (or a couple of other standards) that my Sony soundbar can decode as surround sound rather than (very nice) stereo?

That is correct but all Freeview-Kit recode to Dolby Digital 2.0 or 5.1 as contained in the broadcast on output. It’s part of the Freeview-HD spec along with mixed progressive and interlaced gops within the same programme.
The reason is AAC simplifies including Audio Described audio and unlike freesat does not require a seperate PCM audio track.
There is not that much 5.1 on Freeview-HD. ITV-HD is always 2.0. Record Battlestar Galactica which does have 5.1. Guessing your sound bar will get 5.1 surround

InactiveWhen BG is next transmitted I’ll record it on Freeview and on Freesat and compare the results.
That way I can also check that the Aura/TV/Soundbar settings are correct.

InactiveSenior Management is making testing impossible right now.
Apparently Face Time to her pal is more important!! How very dare she

By the way how can one find out which programs are actually transmitted in 5.1 surround sound on Freeview?
I can also record the same program on Freesat and compare results

ParticipantThe BBC must be giving us a christmas present
Snow Animals is also DD+ 5.1
Even shows like Strictly Come Dancing have not had 5.1 for a couple of years.
Look for reruns of Father Brown they always have 5.1 surround
Doctor Zhivago BBC 2 – HD 13:10 may be. My Aura is set to record it and Oz the Great and Powerfull BBC 1 – HD 13:45

InactiveYes …. My Sony soundbar has no display and it’s a 2.1 with no center speaker so there is no voice shift to center.
It’s a HT-XF9000 so sounds pretty durn good in normal stereo.
It’s only when there is a sound effect that you notice.

InactiveRight toe …. got to the bottom of it….
Its the Samsung TV HDMI pass through — it does not suport Dolby Digital + pass through. Dolby Ditital or DTS yes.
By todays standards its an old set at 4 years old – and not a not a new model then either….
If I connect the Aura directly to the sound bar I get DD+ .. Lovely … BUT …. the amount of input changes and button pressing is beyond the Chief Broom Rider at Bogbody Towers. The CEC/HDMI switching is not 100% perfect with the Sammy.
The fix ? New telly … need to get scheming…
