InactiveHi, I currently have an HB1000S at home with a USB SSD for recordings.
I’m thinking of now using that in our caravan with a mobile sat dish.
At home I’d get an HDR1100 500GB.
i/ Would I be able to copy recordings from the HDR1100 onto the SSD and play them back on the HB1000S?
ii/ Would I be able to play recording from the HB1000S on the HDR1100 via the SSD?

No to both. Only the box that recorded the content will play the recordings back.

You could of course take the box that recorded the content to the caravan together with the drive. Intrigued why you used a SSD other than totally silent recording it offers no advantage over a much much cheaper recording drive.

InactiveI didn’t find mechanical HDs that much less expensive.
As well as quietness, the SSD certainly takes up far less space, is lighter, and requires less power.

£134.00 pound cheaper. You will never get that back in power saving. In addition the jurys out as to longuevity when the data is constantly being written and overwritten as happens with the time shift buffer file. 2.5″ 5200 sata drives use very little power.
They are of course ideal to hold a OS like windows which is not constantly changing.

Here you go. Just did a test on a couple.
64Gb Kingston SSD 80gm 300mA, 1TB, Toshiba laptop drive 112gm 190mA
SSD wins on weight 32 gm lighter. Loses on power 110mA more. Exactly the same size. HDD wins on cost by a long way. Samsung 1Tb SSD £132 Silent. WD Blue 1TB 2.5″ HDD £45. Noise level = negligible

InactiveIt’s a no trainer, HHD for PVR not expensive SSD with unproven track record when used for PVR. You need the right tool for the job.

InactiveThanks for all the responses.
To be honest I had a 250GB SSD “hanging around” so used that rather than buy a dedicated mechanical HD. For the amount its used its enough.

It will be interesting to see how it performs after a year or so. The 1TB WD AV-GP drive in my Foxsat-HDR which is still used every day is nearing 20 yrs old. On the other hand the 2TB Seagate in my HDR-1000S pipeline failed after about 2.5 yrs.
The boot drive in my Core I7 Windows 10 laptop is a very fast 2TB SSD, the second drive which I use for data is a 2TB 2.5″ Sata 6 drive. It’s plenty fast enough for Video processing. Boot time takes about 5 seconds or so.

Then that’s the best reason that I have heard for using one. The other reasons don’t hold a lot of water. ;

ParticipantI also have a spare 250GB SSD as a result of needing more space as windows 10 gets more and more bloated so I replaced the original drive with a 250GB Samsung SSD and used macrium reflect to image the original drive. And used the the original drive in a tiny usb 3.0 enclosure. It’s now a fast way to copy files to other devices.
I might have done as the OP did had I needed a external usb recording drive.
The OP may have been in a similar position. Both my TV and a VBox Ip network network server can record to USB. Thanks to surfeit of pvrs not needed.

InactiveI have the Toshiba mentioned above in one of those enclosures double sided taped to the back of my LG TV for recording/timeslip purposes.
