Her indoors phoned me earlier today to say the 4000T had come up with an message that the maximum number of recording had been reached and that programmes would have to be deleted to allow new ones to be recorded.
Is this really a thing as I’d assumed that as long as there was space on the hard disk then there wouldn’t be an issue? Perhaps another reason why the ability to set up folders to organise the files on the hard disk would be an advantage, assuming the restriction is maximum number of files in a directory.
Have you switched it off and on again?

The problem won’t be maximum number of files in a directory (the maximum for a flat file system will be 4,294,967,295).
Is that exactly what the message was?
Was she setting timers and got a message that you had reached the maximum number of recordings to bet set and to delete one of the other timers to enable it to be set?
As far as I am aware there is no limit to the number of recordings on the disk apart from the obvious capacity of the disk. What does the disk pie chart say in the recordings list?
I agree, I would say that your hard disc is nearly full.
That’s why it wants you to delete some recordings in order to give you enough space to accommodate the new ones you want to put on it.
If you go into your recording list, on the left hand side it will have Delete lit up click on there and it will show the recordings that’s been watched and the oldest recordings it suggests you delete.
Or you can delete some manually one by one, with the pie that Harters mentioned, and the amount of hours in SD, also in HD that’s available alongside.
don’t forget that anything recorded in HD takes up a lot more disk than a S D recording.

I have had a 2TB 5000T full of recordings with file auto delete working.
Many of them 30 minute series recordings.
Absolutely no issues with file numbers only with lack of disk space.
There was also a very large number of recording reservations.
Guessing 16 bits will be used for recording reservation numbers, this equates to 65535 recording reservations.
Like all recent Humax boxes (since the 2008 Foxsat-HD), the file system is Linux EXT3.

Apart from file encryption issues, afaik with the latest firmware all partitions and files can be identified on a Linux booted system.
That does not mean the contents of the files will be understood by Linux.
Machine specific encryption can make the video unusable on any other machine that does not have the required keys to decrypt the content.
Well one source is you … ext3 isn’t a “flat file system”.
P.S. I have no idea why you think the rest of Post 9 and all of Post 10 are relevant to proving/disproving the post that you are quoting.

All other factors being equal a non-flat file system would hold about the same as flat file system or much more.

I never said that EXT3 is a non flat file system. I merely pointed out that Humax boxes use EXT3 and pointed you to a source detailing the details of the limitations of this. Also observed none of these could be related to to the OP’s ideas why his box indicated no space left for recording. It’s very easy to fill up a 500GB HDD on a 4000/5000T particulary if you record lots of series in HD like Corrie and Emmerdale.
As Luke observes it’s not really relevant anyway, the details I posted should have told you that.
Got a litle bit more info. She had turned the box on and gone into recordings when the message popped up about there being more than 1500 recordings – not sure if that was actual recordings or recordings and scheduled – and some would have to be deleted before any more could be added.Definately not HD being full as a lot of series recorded 15 minutes kids programmes. Dont know what the figures were at the time but currently after a bit of a clear out there are 1210 recordings, 813GB hd space available and 36 recordings scheduled although almost all are series.
Box is a 2TB 4000 with the 1.03.39 software.

If you get the message again please would you post exactly what the messages says word for word and any punctuation?
And also check the HDD space available.
Also if the message appears again try to set a new series and a new single programme to record. One of the old SD recorders had a limit for series but it had no limit for individual, or repeat timers.
