Can anyone help me out with the HDR1800T and whether it can handle the proper aspect ration switching of 4:3/16:9 when used with a 4:3 tv? Or is it what I think in being a cut down version of the 2000T in which case I expect it to be useless when used with 4:3 screens
With he help of this forum my HD-FOX-T2 has been working great for a while now and I’d like to step up a notch and get hold of a recorder.
The obvious way to run would be with the HDR-FOX-T2 as I know that will work switching the ratios but as the machine is now old I’m not sure of it’s future support (and certainly the HD-FOX-T2 seems to have been dropped by Humax.) Also the price for a new HDR on Ebay is ludicrous for such an old machine which is why I’m wondering about the 1800T.
I already know about the 2000T which I tried back in April via Argos and took it back as it was lousy in handling aspect ratios on older tv’s.
Would the HDR1800T be a good bet or ought I to think about the HDR-FOX-T2 (even though it looks to be past it’s sell by date) to be sure?
The latest software for the 1800T and the 2000T is identical. As the latest software still has the 4:3 TV bug when run on the 2000T this means that the 1800T has it as well.
Ok thanks Luke, you’ve made up my mind then to steer clear of the 1800T.
I remember I spoke to Humax support about the 4:3 bug when I had the 2000T and they indicated to me it would be fixed by September (and maybe earlier) so methinks they will never fix it now.
Anyway I’m going to take a look at Vestel machines as they have a new range out. The software looks poor compared to that in a Humax machine but they do work properly and that’s the important thing.
Additionally I might get a big external drive for my HD-FOX-T2 and record onto that. It may be a cheaper option and just something else to consider.

I’m of that opinion as well. I was literally surprised when I realised how few bugs the new software fixed.

If you do try one please would you post with your findings. I am after a freeview recorder with bug free AD and no significant other issues. I doubt if any other manufacturer who can get AD as wrong as Humax has wit its freeview HD units and so it’s any other potentially significant issues that I am interested in.

When you posted that there were reported existing obvious bugs with the latest software. Just ordered one off ebay for £39.99. It is one that had the irritating bugs but the seller has update to the latest software.
In the past 7 months I’ve also used 2 youviews, a BT humax and a TalkTalk Huwiew (DN372T). I’m hoping that for my particular location and situation the £39.99 vestel (140 sold, more than 10 available) will be an improvement.
The BT Humax Youview is very let down by its auto-tuning and Audio Description, but I suppose having used other terrestrial Humax recorders for years that should not have come as a surprise.

The bug does not effect the widescreen TV options.
If your TV is widescreen then read no further!
It only effects people who connect their HDR-2000T/1800T to the older style 4:3 TV. If your TV is widescreen (16:9) it does not effect it.
Much of the content of what is broadcast is widescreen and therefore something has to be done to fit this onto an older 4:3 TV. Some channels (example is Channel 4) tend to have a default of displaying 16:9 on a 4:3 TV with black bars on top and bottom. Some of the channels have a default that a widescreen programme is zoomed in on a 4:3 TV so that the there are no black bars on top or bottom but the sides are cut off.
Some people like one way of it doing and some people like the other. The HDR-2000T/1800T has in its menus the option to override the broadcasters default for displaying widescreen programmes on a 4:3 TV. On the older HDR-FOX T2 this works fine but on these newer freeview+ models it makes no difference which of the 4:3 TV options you choose as it will always default to the broadcasters’ default. So some channels you’ll find OK and some you wont.
The bug does not effect the widescreen TV options.
