    1. To try and pause live TV, I press the pause button, but nothing happens. If I press the record button first, then I can sometime hit the pause button, and it works.

Is this correct, I thought I needed to press only the pause button?

    2. If I decide not to restart live TV, can I “convert” paused live TV into a recording for viewing later?

Do you have ‘Recording buffer’ enabled in recording menu?

    Settings

    General settings

    Recording

Once enabled, pressing record should record from the start of the current programme – as long as content is buffered of course

The disk you have attached to the HB-1000S how is it powered?

If it has an activity LED does this flash which watching a programme?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, I have Recording buffer enabled. Padding is Auto.

The hard disk drive is powered only through the USB.

The LED is steady, only until I press Record. It seems that I must press Record, then Stop, then Pause to pause Live TV (and then the LED is flashing).

When I playback, the HDD LED flashes. It seems that I can not pause when the HDD is inactive (and the LED is steady).

Mine is USB powered as well. Mine is recording at present but will recheck when finished. I recall it flashing all the time.

Is the disk an AV model?

I don’t think so. 1TB Touro MX3 Portable Hard Drive (details).

I would assume that if it can record (it can), then it should pause, as this involves recording too?

My unit still recording for another 20 mins.

One thought could it be that on startup the HB-1000S has higher power requirements for its startup processes and less available for the USB socket.

Hate to mention it but on the HDR-10x0S receivers loss of buffer functions (Pause, Record from start) are an indication of disk corruption – needing a reformat.

Will check my unit after 12:30 BST.

    Ditto.

With buffer enabled LED flashes all time, disabled and it stops unless recording of course.

OP – You have to view a channel for a minute or so before the buffer becomes available for that channel.

Only suggestion is watch all recordings and reformat the HDD see if that fixes the problem for you.

Reformatting the disk took all of 60 seconds, and seems to have solved the issue.

The HDD LED light now flashes continuously, and pause works as expected.

Thank you all for your help. Still odd that Record worked, but not pause.

On the Humax models that we can see the file the buffer is one large fixed length file sized for 3 hours of HD. I guess the freetime models are the same. If this file becomes damaged then you loose the buffer functions. Recording writes to a separate area on disk.

Glad you are back in full working order.
