    newbie with Problem!

    For many years, I’ve recorded Radio programmes firstly on a Foxsat satellite unit and then latterly on a FVP 5000 freeview unit, and transferred the recordings onto a USB stick and then played that radio recording in my car with no problems. Unfortunately, both these units have died and gone to the reclamation centre in the sky. So I bought a new Aura unit, expecting to be able to continue doing this – unfortunately whilst I’m able to record an FM radio programme, and replay it via the Aura unit it has proved impossible to transfer the radio files off the Aura to do this. Humax suggested using the open source programme, Filezilla to transfer files; which it will do – but only once in a blue moon. I have noticed that Filezilla does work, but only after a factory reset, and then only once, when something must change in the Aura; it only works with rare frequency after that. The mobile app (p31 in the manual) claims to allow you to convert programmes to a mobile format – but as soon as you select a radio programme the option to convert to mobile format disappears.

    So my plea to the user group is: does anyone know how to get Filezilla working properly; or a different piece of FTP software that does work with FM radio programmes to get them off an Aura unit; or any way at all to transfer radio programmes from the Aura? I suppose that I could play a radio file, and then record it on my laptop – but that would mean an hour’s programme would take 1 hour to record which would rather defeat the object.

    Radio programmes recorded on the Aura don’t need to be (and can’t be) processed by the Aura’s “convert” which is there to downgrade HD TV and allow you to copy the files.

    If you’ve managed to copy radio using FTP and got it to play on another device – good

    I have a frequent problem that the FTP client (in my case WinSCP) often has the connection to the Aura “actively refused”.

    Sometimes turning file share off and on cures it – but mostly it doesn’t. A reboot not a factory reset usually solves the problem. This appears to be a problem with the Aura. Some users have reported no such problem.

    I’ve found that you can only FTP over a wired (not WiFi) connection. Also, it’s possible if the LAN isn’t operating or the PC isn’t on and connected to LAN when you bring the Aura out of standby that could be part of the cause.

    Four alternatives for getting radio programme recordings to listen to off-line:-

    1) For BBC programmes you can use get_iplayer on a Windows or Linux computer;

    2) Use the VRadio app on phone or tablet;

    3) Use the Audacity app on Windows computer;

    4) Use a voice recorder plugged into phone or tablet or computer.

    An alternative to using FTP to copy from Aura to a Windows PC.

    Make sure the Aura has Media Server turned on. Install the free software Media Monkey on your PC. You should eventually find the Aura listed in Media Monkey. You can browse the Aura’s files (Recordings) and find the radio programme you want. You can download it – note it may end up in an odd place (music/unknown/unknown in my case). It will say the file is MP3, it isn’t. Rename it to .TS and process it how you probably did from the FVP 5000T.
