I have just bought a replacement for my HDR 1100 and wonder if it is possible to avoid losing the programmes on the old one.

If the hard drive is removed and placed in a caddy would it be recognised by the new one.

Pretty sure that it won’t work but it would be interesting to know why.

Are the recordings HD SD or a mixture of both ?

The HD recordings at the very least will be encrypted with the decryption key required to view the content which is unique to the box. The key based on what we know from the the earlier HDR-FOX-T2 is derived from the box unique MAC address and it’s serial number. If the box was a HDR-FOX-T2 (Freeview box) there are ways you can make all recordings usable on other kit. We can’t discuss this here, but it’s not going to help on the G2 Freesat boxes.

No idea if SD recordings are recorded without encryption, you would have to try this out. The File System is Linux EXT3, at a guess the new box will be able to see the recording files (though the box can read NTFS USB hard disks).

So the key is unique to the box, that explains a lot. Sad that the customer is not the first concern?

    Nice and clear, thank you.

It’s part of the Freesat requirement to specify the box as Freesat+ capable,

There are many other boxes available that are generic FTA HD DVB-S2 recorders that are not required to encrypt any recordings. Some of which feature a internet delivered epg. In general They aren’t as user friendly as genuine Freesat kit
