To remove clutter in the EPG (as the Foxsat’s favourites don’t work in any useful way) I wanted to delete some of the channels which I don’t watch. I did so and was amazed to see them reappear the next day. I deleted them again and once again, like the best zombies you’ll ever see on the Horror Channel, they came back.
I installed the Channel Editor plugin and hid them. I was unsurprised that that worked (thanks to mogie & adrianf36) and the channels remained hidden. What’s the difference between deleted and hidden, and why doesn’t deleting them work?
As I now had the Channel Editor I thought I’d move some non-Freesat channels to Freesat. I did so but I was surprised that the channels (e.g. PickTV) don’t have any EPG info when they’re set as Freesat yet do when they’re left as non-Freesat. I knew there wouldn’t be a full EPG just now/next but they don’t even have that. Even the i-plate has no programme information. Is this expected behaviour?

Yes, unless the channel is on the epg (doesn’t have to be on yours – eg the other version of ITV1-HD ), when you get a full epg entry.
At a guess when you delete them, all you are really doing is hiding them. At the next boot the custom firmware resets the hidden flag to visible as it reloads the custom channel list. Adrian, Raydon, Partridge or Repassac will know for definite.
I thought the now/next was sent as part of the same data stream as the video & audio?
If you modify channel data via the Humax interface you need to import the data into the web interface to keep them in line. The logic assumes this and is quite complex.
It aims to retain the WebIf modifications but allow the foxsat to add, delete and maintain freesat channels – Essential for the proper ruinning of the Foxsat.
While there is, now and next data, for non freesat as freesat channels the Humax settop application does not look for it in the freesat mode.

The HDR is started automatically at 3 am for what we have been calling the housekeeping boot. During this housekeeping boot the standard list of freesat channels is re-installed, which is why any deleting on its own doesn’t work as it is just overridden at 3am.
The channel editor-plugin with the custom firmware caters for this by maintaining a list of differences to the standard channel list (eg. “set channel xyz to hidden”. Then during the first start-up routine of the box after the housekeeping boot these differences are re-applied on top of the new 3am freesat channel list. In this way the valid 3am freesat channel list updates are not impacted (like the recent addition of the extra Olympic channels), but the custom changes like channel-hiding are still applied in a way which doesn’t require any manual input on a daily basis.

I suspected as much. I wonder what Humax were thinkng of: providing functions (Find strings being another) which work for less than 24 hours before being returned to defaults.

I don’t think you understand – On it’s own the Foxsat will remember deleted channels. It is the combination of making changes using two different user interfaces that causes it – If you make changes using the Humax UI and are using the custom channel editor you should import the settings into the channel editor. That way they are kept in line.

Sorry, looks like I caused some confusion above 😳 😉
Been using the custom firmware for so long I start to forget how the usual firmware functions work!!

That isn’t my experience. Before I installed the custom firmware I more than once deleted channels only for them to reappear the next day.
Have not tested on the latest firmware (and I do have the custom firmware installed) but I am certain it did on 1.00.13 (when much of the channel editor research was done) and I am sure it did on 1.00.15 when Humax extended the housekeeping process to do a freesat tune as it appears to do a rather interesting merge of the old and new data based upon channel number – which was the reason where channel reordering is not permitted.
However a Manual freesat tune always replaced all.
