InactiveHi
I am interested in getting a Foxsat box, but was wondering if it is worth me paying more for the HDR or if i can get the same functionality cheaper just buying the HD and an external drive. a few questions which would help me decide;
1) what type of external HDD is required to record onto, does the HDD need an external power source, or would a portable 2.5″ drive be ok?
2)is there any difference in user functionality when using the Foxsat HD with an external HDD, compared to the HDR? does the menu work/look exactly the same – could you even tell the differencve once everything is hooked up? or is it more of a ‘faff’ with an external hdd, having to specify location to save to, or requring more button presses to do the same things as you would with one click on the HDR?
3) How is the recording function effected with an ext HDD, can i still record one channel and watch another?
Thanks in advance
Joe

ParticipantThe fundamental difference is the HD FOX T2 has only 1 tuner so can only record one thing at a time. You can view a channel on the same mux as the recording though, so for example you can record 1 HD channel and view any other.
A portable 2.5″ drive should be OK, the box will format it EXT3 for you. There’s a minimum size that you have to have (160GB i think could be wrong), I have a 1TB externally powered on mine.
The UI is near identical to the HDT FOX T2 but unlike the HDR FOX T2 you can’t decrypt SD content when copying recordings to a usb drive. The HDR FOX T2 can also be used as a media streamer.

Inactivethanks for the prompt reply
Thats not an issue with regard to recording, I can always just flick on the inbuilt TV tuner for SD viewin.
Could you explain a little further your comment about decrypting SD recordings? Do you mean copying recordings of the ext HDD to say your computer for storage? I would not want to transfer any recordings anywhere, just leave the hdd plugged into the box to use purely as a PVR.
Thanks

ParticipantIf we are talking about the FOXSAT HD (i.e. the Freesat STB), then unfortunately, you CAN NOT record using this box.
(It does not have the same functionality as the HD-FOX T2 – the Freeview STB – which can record to an attached USB drive.)

InactiveYes, I thought you were able to record from the foxsat HD to an external HDD.
If this is not possible, if i were to get the HD Fox T2, are all the other points still valid? Recording is the same on the T2 with an external HDD as it would be with the internal?

Missed the Foxsat in the heading, No recording capability with a Foxsat HD, the freeview HD FOX T2 is capable of recording and the interface is pretty much the same as HDR FOX T2.
