My 2000T has developed a problem with output of sound for Dolby Digital (HD channels) and is same from even old recordings from same channels that were definitely okay before. The sound is distorted. Is ok for sound from basic stereo (non HD) channels. The output from my 2000T is plugged into my Sony AV amp via HDMI as it has been for quite some years and I’ve tried different HDMI inputs on the back of the AMP that I know are working okay (e.g. the one usually used by my Blu Ray player) and sound is still distorted. Is this a known failure ? Obviously I’ve tried swapping HDMI cables, reboot etc.

Have you tried switching it fully off and then back on again?

When you did this did you ensure that it was truly fully switched off e.g. by unplugging from the mains socket for at least a few seconds?

Does the amp need surround sound? If not have you checked the sound setting on the 2000T is set to stereo?

I have already tried fully disconnecting from mains for extended period and no change when powering on again and rebooting.

The amp can see and recognise the Dolby Digital stream coming in from the Humax but what is being delivered to it is distorted audio. As I said I’ve also tried it on other HDMI inputs to the amp which are definitely working perfectly with other multi channel audio. On non HD channels which only provide stereo sound the amp is seeing PCM stream as expected and that is not distorted.

I’ve bagged another same model Humax for peanuts off eBay and if that one is functioning I’ll try a hard drive (or even board swap). It was only £8 with no power supply or remote but I don’t need extra of either. I bought my 2000T when they first came out so its had quite a bit of service but in last few years its been powered down half the time due to using streamed TV mostly. This fault just appeared when I went to check it was scheduled to record the grand prix over the weekend, it was perfect before that and no settings changes had been made before that for YEARS.

Okay, I’ve done some testing and it is definitely a software flaw NOT the hardware of my unit. I suspect it has crept in with latest update to the firmware. I received the other 2000T and did a factory reset on it and let it update to the latest firmware. It exhibited EXACTLY the same distorted sound if “Synchronise Picture & Sound” is set to any value other than 0ms (the higher the value the more distorted the sound is, barely there at 20ms but builds with each higher setting). The “HDMI Sound” sound option setting whether to “SURROUND” or “STEREO” I also discovered actually makes no difference to this so that was a bit of a “red herring” 🙄 However, bizarrely if the “SPDIF Sound” is set to “SURROUND” then the sound is ALWAYS distorted even if “Synchronise Picture & Sound” value is 0ms (I am not even using the SPDIF but it affects the HDMI regardless :? ). I replicated these results exactly on my original 2000T. So its a firmware update that has introduced a problem. My original setting was 120ms and it hasn’t been set to anything other than that since I bought it and first set it up which would have been 2013 when they first came out. I have banged an email to Humax support to see if is a known bug.

Update – tried Humax support and their conclusion is that it is a software fault but (there will be no fix as its an old model). Although their reply “There hasn’t been a recent software update on this Youview model, most probably it’s a software fault.” is a bit suspect as this fault first appeared about a month ago.
