Do you leave the unit on all the time or put it into standby?

If the former then the current thinking suggests setting the unit to turn off at night (mine is set to 02:00) and back on a short ime before first use the next day (in my case 05:00) within the time settings.

I previously had a few bouts of file system corruption when my (nearly 6 year old) 9200 was left on 24-7. The reason for doing that initially was the slow population of the EPG on earlier firmwares. Since setting the timers neither of the 2 units I am responsible for have experienced corruption; (touches wood) and the 2nd unit (9200TB) seemed more prone than my own.

You may be able to retrieve sme but not all recordings if you remove the drive, attach it to a PC, DO NOT allow the drive to be initialised, and run humaxrw from the blog here in recovery mode. versions for Windows or Linux. Note it is best run from an administrator command line.

If you don’t feel confident with that a format in the 9200t is the only other option.

The 9200t format process doesn’t check the surface of the drive – it just re-initialises the ‘FAT’ – (File Allocation Table) marking space as free.

    Good news Dave :D

I’ve just this last week had to repeat the cleaning process myself as I was intermittently losing the clock agin in standby, swapped back my 500GB drive which had been corrupted, surface refreshed and reformatted at thesame time.

It’s now playing second fiddle to the Tivo.

Thanks for the clear explanation Graham.

I’ve now added a FAQ item “Guide to Connecting External DriveTo HD Fox T2” linking back to your post. :-)

If the PVRs were left on (not in standby) then they wouldn’t have found the update(s). The update is only downloaded when the boxes are in standby AND if automatic updates are set to on. It is possible to manually search for updates but only when they are being broadcast. The DTG site (link) has a timetable of updates.

Unfortunately I think you have missed the latest batch of broadcasts for those 2 PVRs.

You can update using a serial null modem cable after downloading from Humax Support site though you would need a PC with a serial port (RS232) or aUSB to serial converter.

I don’t know of any free programs but I believe DVR Studio will read the drive going by the information on their site (link), though it has the 9200t listed erroneously as DVB-S. There’s a trial version so if it doesn’t work you’ve only lost time trying.

I’ve used it to edit 9200t files in the past but only after transfer by other means.

The file system id definitely different to either the 9200t or the later HDRs

The Humax SD recorders use a proprietary disk format. You need to use special software to read the disk such as Humaxrw; see http://humaxdisk.wikispaces.com/HumaxRW. There is a risk that trying to read the disk on Windows has damaged the Humax partition table if this is the case then you can use HumaxCheck to fix the problem.

Humaxrw can also be found here on the Blog download pages ๐Ÿ˜‰

When you do connect it DO NOT allow Windows (or any other OS) to “initialse the drive”

Did you do a default reset after the update? If not do that and remember to note down existing settings and schedules as these will be reset.

If you have already done the default reset try setting an on and off time, exit menu and then and then disable them again. For some reason this has worked in the past.

I believe humaxrw (from the download page here) (link)will read the files from a 9300t drive – you would need to connect using a USB-SATA adapter or direct to a spare port in the PC. Alternatively you could mount the drive in an external USB enclosure.

    It’s command line but straightforward.

Do Not let Windows initialise the drive.

The 9200t will check for an update each night IF the box is in standby and unless you have disabled that option, default is 04:00 hrs. If available it would ask you if you wanted to install the update and recent updates would have promted you to default reset afterwards. If you have had none of these you are probably on an old firmware version, current is V23 for the 9200t which included the EPG caching to disk on standby.

If the box is left on permanently then it will not pick up the updates and it is more prone to drive (file) corruption. It is recommended that the box be put into standby regularly (eg daily) either using the remote or by setting an auto off and auto on time.

If you already have file corruption then a format is necessary, but there are programs available which may recover some of your recordings but require a direct connection to the drive, either using a USB-IDE adapter or removing the drive and attaching to a PC. Do NOt allow a windows PC to initialise the drive.

    Hi liz

as Barry says there is no easy way to transfer the files from a 9300.

However if you are confident about removing the drive and you can copy the files you want off (you may need a specialised program for that eg humaxrw), they could then be transferred to an external USB hard drive formatted for use with the HDR though there may be some file conversion necessary too.

You could try using HDC which has a MAC OS-X version available from the wiki (link) as I don’t see it in the blog post here yet.

Or you could try humaxrw (available on the blog linked to above by Son_t) especially if you thing the drive is having problems. It will enable a backup – format – restore of the drive if you have enough storage for your recordings.

Yoou may also need to default reset if you are having recording problems and you have plenty of space on the drive.
