I should also point out that humaxrw is available in the download section here (link)and if you are not comfortable with the command line then Martin Liddle has posted a link to a GUI for it in this post (link)

If you remove the drive and connect directly to a PC the DO NOT allow the PC to initialise the drive.

The HDR uses a different filestructure to the 9200 so cannot read the files directly. You will have to transfer them off.

Thanks, seems like the best bet for them is 1x 1TB and 1 x 500GB HDRs or 2 x 500GB HDRs then.

Not sure what you are asking re connecting the sky box to the humax.

If you mean can you connect via scart to record programmes onto the humax then no. If that is not what you meant, perhaps you could explain in more detail.

… one recurring theme was a problem due to interference between the signals through the HDMI cable and those going to the aerial when viewing HD channels …

Hence my point about poor screening on the aerial cable. The cable should ideally have both braid and foil screens. Good quality HDMI cables and scart cables should be fully screened too.

Sounds as though you have zoomed in to a 14:9 picture on analogue TV and it has retained the zoom on switching to the humax. If the TV was not zoomed you would not be able to move the picture up and down – at least from my experience of Sony TVs.

set the humax to 16:9 and zoom out on the TV.

Nearly as close as me then (in SE25), I would expect an excellent signal level.

Are there any other factors such as high buildings between you and the transmitter, or poor screening on the aerial cable?

I get a good signal even on an indoor aerial and would expect you to be able to do the same at that distance. Maybe worth a try.

There is a GUI front end for HumaxRW at http://www.betelgeuse-observatory.com/Downloads/HumaxRWFront-End.zip

Thanks for that link Martin – I wasn’t aware of it as I’m comfortable with CL anyway.

To whom do we give credit for it?

How far from Crystal Palace are you?

The HD signals are a lower power relative to the SD muxes, at least until later in the year when DSO occurs.

I would have thought that if the box was overheating then it would be apparent on ‘live’ channels as well, but if it’s in a cabinet do ensure that there is sufficient ventilation.

How are you connecting to the drive?

Would you like a walk through of using the command prompt to see if that works for you?

Welcome to the forum Graham :-)

ISTR having similar problems early on (is it really 7 years ago?). Some of the files could be opened in videoredo and then edited but there was a setting that needed to be adjusted first. I don’t remember what that was but it would be on videoredo’s forum – somthing like the number of gops or frames to be read when opening the file. Videoredo isn’t free though there is a trial, but you may want to try a free one first such MPEGstreamclip (which requires an older version of quicktime) or Project X (which uses Java).

Hi Firstly I am so glad to have found you after the demise of the old forum and good to see a lot of familiar names.

    Ruth

Hi Ruth and welcome to the forum. :-)

See my post no2 above. I don’t actually need to run in XP compatibility on 32 bit Win 7 but the important thing is in the compatibility tab reached from the properties option when you right click the hummyreadfiles0.94.exe file, make sure that in the priveledge section the ‘run as administrator’ is checked.

Hi, and many thanks for the response.

I realised later on that I needed to adjust my BIOS settings to recognise the Humax hard disk (set IDE channel to “Auto”). Once I’d done that, Hummyreadfies 0.94 worked like a dream.

Indeed it even transferred files that had caused the earlier version to crash (something to do with filenames I think).

    So a great success.

    Once again, thanks

    Joe

I sometimes forget that some of you need to connect directly to the motherboard on the PC rather than the USB-IDE route. The 0.94 update was indeed to do with ‘illegal’ (for filenames) characters in the programme name. Glad it’s sorted now. :-)

firstly 9200treadfiles is an old version and you should download hummyreadfiles 0.94 from our download pages (link).

set hummyreadfiles to always run as administrator in the priveledge level section on the compatibility tab reached by right clicking and selecting properties as opposed to using the run as administrator from the right click menu. That works for me on 32 bit Win 7 at least.

Alternatively you can run humaxrw from an administrator command prompt (type cmd into the search box, right click the cmd.exe in the list above and select run as administrator). It’s all command line (no GUI) but straight forward and copes with >256 files if you ever put a larger drive in. It’s on the same blog page as hummyreadfiles.

I’ve been noticing that the BBC in particular have been starting programmes up go 5 minutes earlier than scheduled with the loss of the start of the programme. This does not appear to be as the result of any under-run on previous programmes nor has the eit info corresponded to the start.

note that this observation was not on the hummy but on a Sony hdd/dvd recorder with tracking facility, but also observed minus the eit info on a Virgin Tivo recorder.
