The copy seems to work OK (though it takes an age) … but it won’t copy the whole file. First time it stopped after doing 40 Mb of data; the next time it managed to do about half the movie, 1.2 Gb, and then stopped.

    Any suggestions?

Do you have a Windows PC? If so what version of Windows is it running?

Yes – there was no noise when the old drive was in, and none with the new drive either.

If neither drive spins up then I think there is a good chance it is the 12V supply that has failed; might be the actual power supply or something on the motherboard. If this is the problem then one way to work round it would be to fit a 2.5″ hard drive which only needs 5V. I have got a whole stack of 2.5″ drives if you want me to send you one to try?

Thank you Martin – no there is complete silence – no sound at all when it turns on.

Is the silence with the old drive and the new drive?

I assumed the HDD had died and so have just fitted a replacement Seagate Skyhawk HDD. The machine fired up but did not recognise the HDD and offer to reformat. Recordings are still failing and the PVR options are still greyed out.

Have you tested that the Skyhawk works independently of the Humax? When in the Humax can you hear the drive spin up? If it isn’t spinning up then it might be the 12V supply to the hard drive has failed.

Could this be something the EE Smarthub is doing, as it's the most recently changed piece of kit in the network?

I think that is the most likely explanation. Have a look in the Smarthub settings for anything related to UPnP.

I wonder if this is a sharing problem – Did you enable the legacy SMB client and SMB Direct in windows.

I am puzzled why you think enabling SMB would have any impact on using DLNA to play media; could you explain please?

I am not familiar with fsck so would appreciate an explanation please.

fsck is the standard check and repair software for the common Linux filesystems. You would need to attach the drive to a PC using a USB to SATA adapter and then boot the PC from a Linux live CD to run fsck.

the ones that do work were reformatted to non indexed and default allocation size .

so the latter points may be relevant also .

I take it this was an NTFS formatted drive that didn’t work? Interesting observation about allocation size. The other possibility is that the drive that doesn’t work uses an uncommon chipset that isn’t supported by the Hummax kernel.

Thanks for the information. About a year back I had sent the box over to Digirepairs, and it came back to me with the problem resolved, but now the same [or similar] problem has reoccurred.

    That is disappointing.

I did see a recent post on this forum where a similar problem was resolved by reformatting the HDD [errors had been noted on the HDD], and it fixed the problem. It means getting hold of a HDD docking station and doing a reformat, I think using a linux based operating system.

I would say if the drive is healthy then using fsck has a reasonably chance (based on experience with the HDR-FOX T2) of fixing it without reformatting. The easy test is if you or a friend has a known working SATA drive lying about then put it in the Humax. If the Humax recognises it then there is a problem with the drive taken from the Humax; if it doesn’t then you have the problem that Digirepair only managed to fix for a relatively short time and probably best to look at what other box you could buy.

    ok thanks

    its GPT.

Which explains why it is not recognised. The free version of EaseUS Partition Master may be able to change it to MBR without losing any data; see https://www.easeus.com/partition-manager/epm-free.html

There is a well know hardware problem with the HDR-1000S that causes the problem you are experiencing. Nobody here has so far managed to pin down the exact cause. Sometimes after leaving the box powered off the hard drive may work for a while. If you want a fix, the only route I know is to send it to Digirepairs see https://www.digirepairs.co.uk/product/repair-booking-humax-freesat-plus-freeview-plus-youview-plus-box-repairs-2/

    windows10 latest version .

Plug the USB drive you want to check into the laptop. In the search box at the lower left of the screen type “disk management”. The disk management app should open. In the lower panel of the display, right click on the appropriate Disk x for the USB stick where x is a number stating from 0. If there is only one hard drive in your laptop then I would expect the USB stick might be Drive 1 (in my case with two SSD drives, the USB stick is Drive 2). NB right click on the actual word “Drive x” on a light grey background rather than the areas with a white background, select Properties and then Volumes and you should see a line showing the partition style. See attached image.

i CANT read from integral 128gb ntfs – usb not recognised – any ideas why please ?

Is the partitioning scheme MBR or GPT? If you want to be able to write to the NTFS drives then you could install the custom firmware for the HDR-FOX T2.
