I have a male to female cable. It could be faulty as some of the pins seem to be wired unusually (not that I know what usual is here!) – please could you let me know exactly which each of the 9 pins on each side should be connected and how? Thank you!
You want pin 2 at first end connected to pin 3 at the second end; pin 3 at first end to pin 2 at other end and pin 5 at one end connected to pin 5 at the other end. No other pins are required for this specific task.

I suggest you find a VLC forum and ask the question there. I think it would be interesting for a number of people with a number of different models of Humax but at the moment I don’t have time to pursue it.
Found out few days back by checking all the options. It is quite easy to download a programme from fvp-5000 using VLC on Mac Computer. Once you have opened the ‘library’, main VLC menu on Mac, select ‘local network’ –> ‘Universal Plug and Play’. Select ‘FVP-5000T DMS (IP addr)’ –>Recordings. Now from the Menu Bar at the very top, select FILE –> Convert / Stream.
Select a programme file you wish to download from under the ‘Recordings’ folder and ‘drop’ it into the ‘Convert / Stream’ box. It is important to use the ‘drag and drop’ method, as the ‘open media’ option will not displsy files on fvp-5000t. You can use the ‘open media’ option if you just want to convert the format of an existing video file under your Mac folders, e.g. TS to mp4, or just Sound output file.
The next setting is under ‘Choose Profile’. Click on ‘Customise..’ and select the output. I have been using MPEG-TS. Under the tab ‘Video Codec’, select ‘keep original video track’ and do same under ‘Sound Codec’. Click on ‘Save as new profile’ and give your profile a name, for future use. Now under ‘Choose Destination’ select ‘save as file’ Decide on location and filename.
Lastly, click on ‘Save’. Download takes a few minutes, depending on the network speed and the speed of the Mac as it is doing a ‘conversion’ on the fly.
Interesting to note that one can set the output profile to be just sound, eg, mp3, flac, Wav. Useful if it is a music programme and you just want the sound or for anyone with visual impairment etc..
Barry could this be turned into a FAQ please?

Been on with Freeview Support regarding lower signal strength on several channels. These are BBC4 HD BBC News HD and Quest HD.
I was told to carry out an initial scan with aerial lead out then in.
That did help with Live TV but the signal through the Humax is still showing 46/48% strength.
Signal strength isn’t the important parameter; what are the signal quality readings?

Thanks for your tip about VLC, I can see and play all the recorded files on fvp-5000t when running VLC on iMac (OS – Catalina) and works really fast. I now just need to find a way of saving it! (Although not a big issue as I can just transfer using my Windows Laptop)
I did try playing about with saving recordings from VLC. I thought it had failed but to my surprise when looking in the Documents directory on my PC, I found it had saved a recording, so it is possible. Only problem is that there was no sound when played, I guess it is using the wrong sound track. If you are interested in getting this working on the Mac I suggest you find a VLC forum and ask the question there. I think it would be interesting for a number of people with a number of different models of Humax but at the moment I don’t have time to pursue it.

I searched for a possible updated driver.
There is nothing wrong with the USB to serial converter as it has passed the check when linking pins 2 and 3. The fault must be in the cable.

ParticipantI am probably not expressing myself clearly. You probably have the knowledge to poke around in one of these boxes and find the fault; sadly most of us don’t. If you can identify and fix the fault, you have a number of options:
1. Just publish your findings and leave it to others to do it. User Biggles here took this approach in identifying a problem with the PVR-9200T, where the clock chip used to keep track of time in standby stopped working. Hundreds of people have used the information he put in the public domain to fix their own boxes. I think I was the person who persuaded him to start the project and supplied him with a faulty clock board.
2. Sell instructions to fix the problem for a few quid.
3. Repair boxes for people. Digirepair are currently charging £70 plus shipping to repair this fault. We can’t judge whether this is a fair price as we don’t know the nature of the fault.
I will do what I can to assist you if you do want to give it a shot. I don’t have any direct interest in this as I don’t own an HDR-1000S but I have been interested in the problem since it was first reported. From the outset it smelt like a hardware problem to me but I kept getting told it must be a software problem. I was rather satisfied when it was confirmed as a hardware problem.

Many thanks. I now have a USB serial converter and a null modem cable. With the driver installed, the new serial port is showing as Serial (COM) Port COM3.
When running Flash9200.exe, the program counts down from 29 to 0 and then displays Error location 1. Error waiting for 2.
I ran the cable test with pins 2&3 connected and it said that the serial port and cable seem to be working ok.
You have almost certainly got a cable that doesn’t provide the required crossover of pins 2 and 3. A null modem cable should do that but countless people have been sold cables that don’t. If you have a mutimeter check whether pin 2 at one end is connected to pin 2 at the other end (which is wrong) or pin 3 (which is correct).

Hello Martin, would consider it but I have only a single LNB, otherwise I would, if I get a dual LNB receiver in for repair it annoys me that I cannot fully check all the features. I will have to price one up, I know they are cheap so possibly on my list. Ta
As the problem with the HDR-1000S is that the boxes loses the ability to access the hard drive although the hard drive is known to work properly, having only a single LNB would not be a problem. I am sure one of the owners with a faulty box would be happy to send it to you if you were prepared to have a look and see if you could fix the problem. Are you open to me pointing people in your direction?

I still have this issue most days, so I thought I would try Chrome Beta to see if this resolves this issue.
I am now running Chrome Version 89.0.4389.40 (Official Build) beta (x86_64) on my Mac.
It is odd; I am running Chrome 88.0.4324.104 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Windows 10 without any problems with this site.

Just an update. I am more than delighted with the Manhattan T3-R compared to the FVP-5000T. The design and build quality is far superior, faster loading and navigation, remote control is of a much better design and no niggly problems like the Humax.
Thanks. I have thought it was a decent box for a while now.

I don’t see anything there. If you know the answer perhaps you can tell me.
I think the answer is that a tuner only displays a signal strength when it is actually in use. Set up three recordings from different multiplexes and see if all three tuners display a signal strength.

Please tell me there are no problems as I would really like one asap.
I would suggest you listen to any advice that brian offers as he is a very experienced PVR user who owns an Aura. Perhaps ask questions about the issues that concern you from the Amazon reviews.

Ah yes sorry about that Martin, as I was quoting the email from Humax verbatim I felt it made sense to include the software that they referred to a well. No offense intended or taken.
I don’t take any offence; just offering an alternative that has helped a fair number of people.

I have downloaded the files, have resurrected an old laptop with a serial port I used for cisco configurations and a USB to serial adapter. I will make an attempt at the upgrade later this week.
Can I politely suggest you use flash900 to do the upgrade rather than the dire WDN4OAK+ , I write Flash9200 as so many people were struggling. It is freeware and can be downloaded from https://tynecomp.co.uk/flash9200.html

Of course, what this means in practice is that *if* the box develops a fault and you’ve got some must watch programmes on there, you can copy locally onto a spare disk and then restore them when a new replacement box arrives.
Would this work only with SD recordings because of the box specific encryption on HD channels? Or does that not apply to the Aura.
