Mine wont start past the splash screen without looping.
The only way is to leave the top cover unscrewed, pull out the white plastic 4 wire square power supply for the HDD, let it boot until the picture comes on and plug the HDD power back in.
To me that sounds very like an issue with the HDR-FOX T2 which after a lot of work was traced to a small capacitor on the motherboard. You can read about it at https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/start-up-fails-when-hdd-connected.10164/

The TV connected to HDR2000t has no sound and the picture is a shade of pink. With the aerial plugged directly into the TV both the sound and picture are perfect.
Is the HDR-2000T connected to the TV by SCART lead or HDMI cable? In either case, try reseating the connectors at either end of the leads.

Would this be a good/better buy chaps?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manhattan-SX-Freesat-HD-Box/dp/B08LN9FSBR?th=1
A good/better buy than what? It appears to me to be a set top box without any recording capability.

I tried that but after a Factory Reset there was no backup data available.
I think there is more than one type of reset; which did you use please?

I have enabled Windows Defender through the Firewall. Checked that Network Discovery is On. Checked that various Services have been Started. Checked that SMB 1.0 is On in Windows Features.
Mapped a Network Drive Z: to my Humax (192.168.1.74 in my case) and I can Ping the IP and get a reply. And I can see the Z: drive Recordings.
My Windows 10 PC cannot access the share on the Humax either with File Explorer or with an FTP Client.
What FTP client are you using and what parameters are you supplying please?

Unable to operate my HUMAX series 300 Freeview box to watch programmes on ITV hub now that this channel has altered the login procedures
Please can you confirm the exact model of Humax PVR?

In the meantime, should your “hunch” prove correct, can the motherboard be repaired/replaced at a cost effective price.
Digirepairs https://www.digirepairs.co.uk/product/humax-set-top-box-repair-booking/ offer a fixed price no fix, no fee repair service for £69.95. There have been reports that they have fixed the problem for some people.

Thanks Martin
I have 3 or 4 media players that I’ve been using up to now. To be honest it’s not looking from the Humax settings that the drive is mounted, although it does know what it is. Not sure about the partition style, I formatted it in windows 10 as FAT32 and all looks ok in windows, capacity etc., is there a way to find out what it is now, disc properties maybe?
Try this link for partition type https://pureinfotech.com/check-gpt-mbr-partition-windows-10/

I’ve a 500GB external drive which I’ve formatted in FAT32. I’ve put about 25 video files on it mostly .mp4. When plugged into the USB3 port on the Aura, I cant find anything. In the Aura’s settings it shows the drive but says the external drive is “safely been uninstalled” (or words to that effect).
Have you installed something like VLC to play the content? If you have then what partition style is the hard driver (MBR or GPT)?

Are you or anyone able, please, to comment on my previous question re compatibility of my Pioneer 4280XD 720p plasma TV and the (Arris) 4K Ultra HD Freesat Recorder?
I didn’t answer because I have no experience at all with the Arris box. You really need to find a forum that covers the Arris box. You might try avforums.com.

Upon starting up the Humax the HDR immediately recognised the new hard drive and invited me to format it, which I did. I did a test record and playback. For the moment the Humax appears to be working OK.
Be aware that the hardware fault I described earlier does in its early stages come and go, particularly if the box has been switched off for a while. Let us know how things work out over the next few weeks.

PS: Addendum 1305hrs 16/10/22: I have looked into DIY replacement HD. There are videos available on YouTube. It appears reasonably straight forward. I have ordered a replacement HD.
I think that it is more likely to be a common fault somewhere on the motherboard that prevents communication between the CPU and the hard drive.

It works in 4K on my aura. Not every program is in 4k, are you playing 4k content?
Is that from the Disney+ app?

No, it is on.
Which means the TV will receive a weak signal when the Humax is in standby.
