I now have two of everything. Unfortunately it seems to have put the worst ones first.
You need to do a manual tune. See post 3 of the following thread Link to Manual tune instructions
On a side note when I tape things lately it records over things I’ve previously taped so its a case of hunt the recording. There is 71% free disk space. Do I need to format the drive?
Yes formatting the drive is exactly what you need to do. This will of course delete all the recordings. Be aware that if you do nothing then all the recordings will vanish before too long.

Martin, I’m not sure why you’re being so defensive towards what is a perfectly reasonable assumption based both on the technology they implemented, and years of working in software development.
Because I don’t think it is a reasonable assumption. For what little it matters I have been developing software for 45 years and running my own business for more than 30 years. My prediction is that there may be a few more apps of little value to most people and perhaps Sky player but I doubt we will see the other players that would be of some value to the majority.

The whole premise behind an app-based feature system is to provide a platform for feature expansion. I
Where have Humax said that? It might be what you think but that doesn’t make it fact. I agree it would be nice to have more players available (the rest of the stuff is of no interest to me personally) but (with the exception of Sky Player) Humax didn’t promise it so I don’t expect it. The main hardware difference between the HDR and the Youview box is a more powerful CPU. If that is what is required to support better portal functionality then it is hard to see how it could be implemented on the HDR.

Is this a fault?
This has been reported before and is the way the box works. Best advice is to record things rather than relying on time shifting which does have some quirks.

Am I up the wrong tree with my HDR FOX T2?
So have you got a FOXSAT (satellite) or HDR-FOX T2 (Freeview)? Different animals with different software.

I found some software via this forum that says it will enable me to connect my PC to a HUMAX via USB and edit / transfer the HUMAX files. The software looks a bit old?
That doesn’t sound right; you shouldn’t need any special software to download from the HDR. The trick is to ensure the recordings are decrypted prior to transfer. The only way to do this with SD recordings and the standard firmware is to copy to an attached USB drive. HD recordings cannot be decypted with the standard firmware.

how do I update, upgrade my box?
I assume you mean update the software. What version is it running currently? You have two options to update: either leave the box in standby overnight and it will update automatically next time the software is transmitted (but that could be a good few weeks at the moment) or update it from a PC for which you will need a null modem serial cable and probably a USB to serial converter (see Link to Flash9200 for more details).

I don’t have one to connect to the rs232 serial port at the rear of the pvr.
You only need a serial cable if you decide to update the loader which in my view is not essential and will not change the symptoms you are seeing.
It has a short 40 pin IDE ribbon inside, leading from a usb 2.0 socket. Can I cannibalise this temporarily to connect directly to the hd in the pvr? Does this represent a chink of light?
It will allow you to connect the drive from the Humax to your PC and run the Seagate Seatools for DOS. I would regard this as a sensible thing to do on a second hand machine but again your test with no hard drive connected indicates it will not fix the fundamental problem.

I will need the serial cable to use the Flas9200 s/w suggested, and I presume also for the Seatools? I don’t yet have this cable.
Yes you need a serial cable for Flash9200 but for the hard drive (if you don’t have a PC with IDE ports) then you need a USB to IDE adapter.
Okay, I keep it powered down, then when I switch on at the back, if I use the standby button on the front, or the remote, it boots up to STING, and then goes back to —- (either on the left, or sometimes the right), then when I boot again using either standby button, it boots (via STING) to BBC1.
If it was in standby when the power was turned off at the back then what you describe is perfectly normal (except that the display should be showing the time after the initial boot). My best guess is that this is a faulty clock board; the problem that can be fixed by cleaning is far and away the most common but there are other possible problems. Hopefully Biggles (who is the expert on the clock board) will be along to give his verdict. Maybe someone has a spare one they can let you have?
Martin Liddle
ParticipantI am puzzled by the symptoms. I doubt that the loader version is significant. As far as I know it is never broadcast OTA and must be downloaded from a PC. See Flas9200 web site for one way of doing this. Can you describe what you mean by “It takes two boots to load into BBC ONE”? I think I would clean the clock board to be on the safe side even though the symptoms aren’t quite right for that problem and run Seagate Seatools for DOS on the hard drive to check that out.

I regularly transfer files from our Humax onto a hard drive, so that we can watch them on a computer while travelling. Yesterday I transferred a film as usual, the Humax was full as we had been away, then the Humax would not copy any further files and stopped recognising any of the files already on the hard drive, although it does still recognise the folders, just showing them as empty. I have exhausted my somewhat limited troubleshooting ideas, i.e. checked file and disc formats, tried hard drive on computer and the film I recorded yesterday plays fine. Any ideas?
I think you should start by telling us what model of Humax you have?

Does this sort of thing happen often ?
Not very often but not unprecedented.

Now for the problem: We’ve been away on holiday and recorded lots of ‘stuff’ on the HDD of our HDR-Fox T2 500GB which we bought a couple of months ago.
All was well till I got the screen telling me to format the HDD.
I also notice that a small icon on the front panel says ‘FULL’ which I assume is the HDD ?
No; the “FULL” refers to the output resolution.
Am I going to have to sacrifice all our recordings and format the HDD anyway ?
I think what you are seeing may be due to the HDR detecting a problem with the file system and making it read only. I think the only realistic hope of salvaging the recordings would be to install the custom firmware and use maintenance mode.

Can I transfer (save) the recordings I want to keep (or indeed the whole contents) to the new HUMAX or a computer before I format the original HDD? (when I hope the original machine will work fully again.
If you connect the hard drive to a PC then you can certainly download the recordings using humaxrw see Link to humaxrw. There have been some reports recently that programs cannot be successfully transferred back on a 9300 (the 9200 works fine). The author is happy to investigate the problem but needs the cooperation of a user to enable him to fix the problem; perhaps you could assist?

I have taken the hard drive out and connected to my linux machine. However I cannot see any file for the items that are recorded. Is there any way I can rip the file out ? I am using a SCSI to USB convertor with power.
The 9200 uses a proprietary file system that neither Linux nor Windows understands. You are looking for humaxrw see http://humaxdisk.wikispaces.com/HumaxRW which is available for both Windows and Linux.
