Is it necessary that it should be both unplugged/switched off at mains, and the rocker switch off, before this stage?

No need for it to be unplugged; you can happily leave it plugged in and just switch on the power.

Hi – Have been away and just noticed the reply to my post :) I had the same problem with Freeview, of non recorded series, even though they were in the schedule as series recording. Humax have told me that when I go away and have a series set to record, I should set it to power up for 20 minutes each day on BBC1, so that the EPG regenerates.

Alternatively you could remove the pre and/or post padding that I am guessing you have set; you would then not need the 20 minute wake up which has its own risks.

the signal strength appear to now be about 80% with the qulity still 100%.

The quality is the important factor. Any signal strength above about 40% ought to be OK. It would be very helpful if you could report back in a few weeks if this does indeed fix the problem.

    What custom firmware?

You might care to have a look at the hummy.tv forum and wiki.

but does anyone have any ideas?

I think the only alternative to formatting is to install the custom firmware which has a maintenance mode that will allow e2fsck (the Linux utility with equivalent functionality to chkdsk on Windows) to be run. I think there is a reasonable chance that it would recover the bulk of your recordings.

    1. I take it switching padding off automatically switches accurate recording on?

    Correct.

    2. On my previous box I was frequently prompted to do a re-tune because new channels had been found. This hasn’t happened since I’ve had the Humax. Does it? If so, presumably an auto-tune should be avoided? Do you have to repeat the manual tuning procedure?

It will prompt from time to time, but in my experience not as frequently as the TV. Irritatingly with the latest software versions if you are not around when it prompts it will go ahead and do the auto tune. You will then need to repeat the manual tune but having done it once it is pretty quick subsequently. Another irritation is that any sort of retuning will delete the schedule of future recordings; this can be worked around by installing the custom firmware.

signal strength and quality both 100% but when I’m haing r]troubles before power off etc the quality is annywhere between 40and 80%

I would guess your problem is the 100% signal strength; this may well be too high and is overloading the tuner. If you have an aerial amplifier then try removing it or fit an attenuator.

Presumably by saying’in standby’ you mean pressing the power off button on the remote?

It isn’t a power off button; the manual refers to it as the “Standby” button. It changes the box from the active state to the lower power consumption standby state.

When / how can I get S/W updates if I’m miles out of date?

    Could this solve my problem?

Version 1.00.26 is the latest; you either leave the box in standby overnight until the next transmission of the update (I don’t know when the next one will be,could be several weeks) or you download the update from the Humax support web site to a PC and then connect the Humax to the PC via a serial cable and upload the update. However I don’t think that will help with your specific problem.

If I power the box off for a few minutes and then switch back on everythings OK with the program showing 100% signal.

Is that 100% signal strength or 100% signal quality?

Also aouomtic updates…its set for them but I dont seem to have had any…should I???

What software version is your box using? To receive them automatically the box needs to be in standby overnight.

If accurate recording will adjust for any re-scheduling of a programme (eg previous prog over-runs), I don’t need padding at all do I?

With the box mistuned as it is currently then padding will be more reliable than accurate recording. If you choose to sort out the tuning issues then you should find that accurate recordings works well; not completely infallible but significantly better than padding.

Could a software update fix this?

Unlikely. If you go to Menu>Settings>System>Signal Detection then press the right arrow (to the right of the OK button) what channel numbers are reported?

I’ve done a channel re-scan, but it made no difference.

Have you tried a manual tune? See Link to manual tune FAQ

How can I play the files without getting this encrypted message?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you cannot remove the encryption at this stage; it can only be done on the box where the recording was made.

I have all the details from that post and several similar ones.

It’s the box that says no chanels found when I enter the details manually.

Odd. What transmitter are you tuning to?

Does this help Link to manual tuning FAQ? Note that where it says to check a tick box “I am in the aerial trade” the relevant tick box is now labelled “Detail view”.
