but I do have a local network going with an A C Ryan media player and a PC connected. Have I understood you correctly? If I have an external HDD formatted in EXT3 and connect it to the router in some way, then I can transfer recordings from the Humax to the external HDD and can then transfer those recordings onwards via the local network to a PC whose hard drive is formatted in NTFS and can then edit or burn DVDs of those recordings?
Why do you want to connect the external drive to the router? It needs to be connected to the Humax and with the standard firmware copying SD programs to the external drive will remove the encryption. You can then FTP them to the PC.

hasn’t been updated since 2008 (it has been on standby overnight so don’t know why it hasn’t automatically updated previously)
It should have updated unless you have disabled the regular check for a software update. I assume you understand that standby means the state where the box will not display live TV and the front panel is showing the time and date.
I don’t have a cable to update via download.
It isn’t very expensive (less than £10) to buy the necessary components
Oh Really, really stupid question, on the DTG schedule page when the Humax OTA update is being broadcast I’m assuming that HUMAX will be listed on that page ? Is that correct ?
Correct.

I will at some stage want to transfer broadcast recordings from the HDR’s internal HD to an external HD in order to use it in another location, archive them or make room on the admittedly enormous internal HD.
Firstly, can I connect the HDR to a computer directly via USB to transfer recordings?
You need to be aware that all recordings made by the HDR are encrypted. With the standard software SD (but not HD) recordings can have the encryption removed by copying to attached USB storage. The quickest way to transfer recordings is via a network connection.
Secondly, if I want to use an external hard drive connected to the HDR, am I correct in thinking the HDR will format the external HD into either FAT32 or some other format – Ex2?? If I opt for the FAT32 format, apart from the 4GB file limit, is there a limit to the size of hard drive I can copy it to which will still be supported by a Windows 7 pc for purposes of editing and writing to a DVD.
There are limits on the partition size that Windows will format but larger sizes can be formatted (up to 8TB) with third party utilities. The EXT3 Linux file system can support much larger drives and doesn’t have the 4GB limit.
Thirdly, if I didn’t want to be restricted by the FAT32 file limit and chose to use the Ex2 (not sure if correct name), how would I get a Windows 7 pc to support that format so that I could edit the recording and write it to a DVD if necessary?
Install a Windows driver for the EXT3 file system.
One of the advantages of the HDR compared to the Youview box is that there is user community developed custom firmware that enhances the features of the box and would make several of the things you want to do simpler.

This has just happened to me, too. Do I really need to format and lose all my Chritmas TV?
The alternative to formatting is to install the custom firmware and use fix-disk. The problem most likely is a marginal disk sector but depending where on the disk it is, the process of fixing it may be straightforward or may be quite complicated but if you are prepared to stick at it the chances of recovering all recordings are good.

I purchased a HUMAX PVR9150-T about 18 months ago. And until recently have been very pleased with the performance. Recently, however, a program will appear in the recording schedule but will not subsequently record.
The most likely cause will be that the box is not tuned correctly; see the Biggles manual tuning FAQ http://myhumax.org/forum/topic/week-old-9300t-and-epg-wont-fill-up-for-week#post-7097

I would like to move my .ts recordings to a NAS from the Hummy.
Are you aware that all the recordings are encrypted?
My box is connected to the home network via an ethernet connection, and that works fine.
You could enable the built in FTP server on the Humax and use FTP to move the recordings to the NAS but what you are probably looking for is the custom firmware which will allow a much wider range of networking options such as samba and NFS as well as other useful features.

I would be grateful if you could help with the following:
I have a humax rm -fo1 and I can’t remove the letters ec4s which are permanently on the top left hand corner of the screen.
rm-f01 is the model number of the remote control. Which Humax box do you have? Usually the display in a top corner is coming from the TV not the Humax. What make and model of TV do you have?

Also could you clarify re the encryption. Are you referring to DRM rights?
Yes if it is implemented in the same way as the HDR-T2 there is additional DRM protection for HD recordings using the DTCP-IP protocol. Hence clients need to support DTCP-IP and not many do so far.

Probably the most buggy piece of hardware at this price I have ever bought. Shame.
It is on the initial release version of the software with a new version due soon. In my experience a lot of products are buggy when first released. Humax have a reasonably good record of fixing problems and adding functionality to products.

For some reason, where there should be black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, the picture is stretched to fill the whole screen so people look thin and tall.
other people have reported the same thing. Best advice is to wait and see if the next software version helps.

it’s powered on, there is a green light on the front panel but no output of any kind visible on the TV – neither channels nor menu can be seen on the TV, whether the front panel or remote is used. Any idea what this might be?
First guess would be the SCART lead is loose at one end or the other.

Is it possible to record onto the hard disc from an external source via the SCART, or composite video?
As Barry says this is not possible nor is it possible on most PVRs as they simply record the incoming digital stream and don’t need an MPEG encoder. A DVD recorder is your best bet.

Am I missing some sort of update to my device perhaps?
Yes you need an update but as Humax have not released one and there is no indication of when they will release one you are in just the same position as all other HDR owners.

Do they magically appear on the TV screen?
No the way the custom firmware is implemented is that what appears on the TV screen is unchanged. the magic comes from your computer connecting to the Humax either via a web browser or via Telnet.

but I see you are suggesting a solution, which I can’t follow, I’m afraid. Having torn most hair from my scalp, I’m about to blow £200 on a new one, given mine is already 2 years old…. Can you save my bank balance?
The simplest solution would be to revert to the .09 software and format the disk which should be a complete fix to the problem. The format will delete the existing recordings. The alternative is to install the custom firmware. The process of correcting the problem you are suffering has got much simpler over the last few weeks due to the work of af123 and xyz321 over at hummy.tv. If all else fails I will fix the box for you providing you pay the carriage costs.
