So I reset the recorder after which all my recordings were still available.
So could you play these recordings?

ParticipantI finally got a chance to test the fix for the black screen bug. I had brought the Aura out of standby and live TV was working, I attempted to play a recording and got a black screen, I stopped the recording and live TV was still working. I tried the suggest fix of “Restart all apps” and now both live TV and recordings produced a black screen. Putting the box into standby and waiting for it to shutdown and then restarting fixed the black screen problem for both live TV and recordings. My conclusion is that there are several causes of the black screen problem and the suggested fix does not cure all black screen problems.

Now, if only I could switch off the damned LED on the front of the unit!
In Settings> Freeview Play Preferences you can adjust the LED brightness and if you so desire set it to 0. The next setting down will turn off the light when in deep standby but personally I prefer not to use deep standby.

Humax Aura 4K Android TV Recorder 2TB
I think when I did this, my first attempt failed because where the instructions say press the TV standby button I was pressing the large PVR standby button; when I tried again and pressed the TV standby button it worked. The TV Standby button is the small one at the top of the remote between Google assistant button and AV button.

I have tried to reset the remote but getting nowhere. I have a Samsung tv and have gone through the codes several times but nothing is happening.
Please could you tell us which model of Humax PVR you have?

Anyway, I’m a bit hesitant now about buying one off Ebay. I wouldn’t know for sure if I was buying a HDR-FOX-T2 with Youview forced on to it or actually a DTR-T1000 in disguise.
I think the chance of you finding another HDR-FOX T2 with Youview software are vanishingly small; I haven’t heard of one before. Have a look on Facebook marketplace, there are often HDR-FOX T2 for sale locally.

Regarding the Ebay link, is that setup screen Youview or Freeview?
To be honest, it is a long time since I have setup an HDR-FOX T2 and I simply can’t remember. I used one for ten years but as my hearing is deteriorating as I get old, I needed subtitles that worked. I am currently using a Humax Aura but that doesn’t fit your requirements as it does lose some functionality without an Internet connection and whilst it is very responsive it does have more bugs than the HDR-FOX T2 due to Humax terminating software development too early (in my opinion).

1. Does it require an internet connection to set it up or will it work straight off with just an aerial? The reason I ask this is because I have limited data mobile broadband and also do not want to rely on internet connections if I ever need to do a factory reset in the future.
It does not need an internet connection for setup.
3. Like all Humax machines, I am fully aware they can develop faults/glitches/bugs etc. What particular glitches is the Fox T2 prone to?
The only issue that really bothered me was that the subtitles get hopelessly out of synch. There is also the problem that the hardware is getting old and faults do develop; solutions are available for some of the commoner ones if you can use a soldering iron. With luck you can get hold of a decent box that hasn’t been heavily used and will give you several years of good service.
There is also custom firmware for the HDR-FOX T2 that works alongside the standard firmware to provide additional features.

How do I know what leads are good quality? ‘Gold plated connectors’ sound good, but is that just marketing BS?
I wouldn’t worry about gold plated connectors; in my experience it is the shielding that matters. These double shielded cables are probably a good option https://www.aerialsandtv.com/product/coax-2m-quality-fly-lead

ParticipantI would suggest that your best chance of attracting the attention of the author xyz321 is to post in https://hummy.tv/forum/forums/pvr-9150-freeview-recorder.8/ and include an @xyz321 in your post. He is still active on the hummy.tv forums although I don’t think he has done anything with humaxrw in recent years.

This is probably a really dumb question, but my aerial socket in the wall is female and the RF IN on the back of my smart new Aura is female, too.
So I take it I need a ‘male to male’ lead.
Are these as good as trad male to female leads?
I have always thought traditional aerial leads are male to male. I don’t think the type of connector on the end makes any significant difference to performance but what does matter is to get one that is well screened (which many cheap ones are not).

How do I do a Freeview reset?
Press Freeview button> Settings> Freeview Play Preferences then scroll down quite a long way to find the Freeview Reset. Just above the Freeview Reset are the options to save and restore Freeview preferences.

I only record HD generally, but I have not experienced any skip problems. I have it set for 2 minutes forward and 30 seconds backwards.
I use 1 minute forward and 15 seconds back. I had awful problems with an HD recording of Football League highlights from ITV1 HD. Generally speaking I don’t see many skip problems with SD recordings.

I guess the question is whether this is repairable?
I would suggest also posting the question over at https://hummy.tv/forum/ where several hardware fixes have been identified.
