Is there any formal method of reporting such issues, or do we rely on the manufacturer to monitor the forum?
You report it to Humax support. There is no evidence that Humax monitor this Forum.

ParticipantOh dear. What is the model of the hard drive (it is shown in the second line of the Hard Drive diagnostic produced by the Humax) and what is the Physical sector size (seventh line down)?

However, the HDD test in Settings – Data Storage shows a disk failure, error 81, and a suggestion that format should be used to recover the data storage. The raw values in the drive diagnostics are 16 (buff), 9560, 27, 2 (orange) and 2 (orange).
I will run Fix Disk again
OK you have certainly improved things but as you suspect things are still not quite right. See how the next run of fix-disk goes.

is that is what I should have done.
Yes and worth trying. If you format without fixing the problems then they will remain in place; the filesystem will be fixed for the time being but the problems will come back in due course.

If I remember correctly EXT2 works on USB flash memory but not proper hard drives.
That doesn’t sound right to me. EXT2 and EXT3 use the same file system structure but EXT3 adds journalling support for greater robustness. I used EXT2 formatted drives for years without problems. Can you provide any evidence to back up your recollection?

In the self test logs there are five instances of #1 and 16 of #6
# 1 Short offline Completed: read failure 90% 9553 1805655240
# 6 Short offline Completed: read failure 90% 9553 1805655232
These are linked to the problems reported by attributes 197 and 198. fix-disk will hopefully map out the sectors concerned; if not it should be possible to do it from the command line.

I do not understand how I can send you the file. Extracts for the items you mention are:-
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct, PO–CK, 8, 100, 100, 036, 100%
9 Power_On_Hours, -O–CK, 9545, 090, 090, 000, 90%
187 Reported_Uncorrect, -O–CK, 14, 086, 086, 000
197 Current_Pending_Sector, -O–C-, 7, 100, 100, 000
198 Offline_Uncorrectable, —-C-, 7, 100, 100, 000
The reallocated sector count is low (up to say a thousand reallocated sectors would be OK). The Current_Pending_Sector and Offline_Uncorrectable are a concern. As I think you suspected, running fix-disk is the next thing to try.

Can you see the pdf file?
No. The critical items from the diagnostics are the “Raw values” of the following attributes:
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct
9 Power_On_Hours
187 Reported_Uncorrect
197 Current_Pending_Sector
198 Offline_Uncorrectable

We have been having problems with our Humax 1010S for a while now inasmuch as we cannot play 4OD; we can play all of the other On-Demand channels with no problems whatsoever.
What program(s) are you trying to play?

The latest fix 3.00.20 on Humax web site indicates this fixes HD problem.
Does it? The notes I can see say it fixes an HDCP issue which stands for High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection; which I don’t think has anything to do with the reports of boxes unable to see the hard drive.

On limited testing since then, the new version appears to have resolved the turn-on issue at least for my TV,
Good; could you update us in a couple of weeks as to whether this has completely fixed the problem for you?

Surely therefore, there must be an obligation on the broadcaster to do what it needs to do – provide accurate timing signals – so that the Accurate Record works as advertised.
Try contacting Freeview and see what they say.

I will try again in a few days with a wireless dongle.
OK. Installing should be a case of clicking on a button and waiting although there have been some recent cases of people needing to make several attempts before it successfully downloads all the files required.
I had considered doing a factory reset, but cannot find assurance that records on the HDD will be left undisturbed. It is said to be the case for Foxsat, but is it the same for Fox?
Yes it is the same with recordings left untouched but I don’t see the point. You have a possible problem with the hard drive and the starting point should be looking at the SMART data which will say whether it is worth attempting to fix the errors or better to replace drive.

I will search for info on how to start Samba.
Not sure if you saw my post at the bottom of the previous page but you should start by installing the full custom firmware (I assume you currently only have the minimal install) and looking at the hard drive diagnostics (SMART data).

Every function checked has been OK.
Excellent
Is it known what condition, or method of operation, could have caused the fault?
I don’t think anybody knows for certain. It is often associated with corruption of the file system which is why the recommended method is to use fix-disk to hopefully remove any file system errors. It might be worth pointing a web browser at the Humax IP address and see if you can install the full web interface for the custom firmware (wireless connection can be used). This will then allow you to look (Diagnostics>Hard drive) at the physical health of the hard drive.
