I’ve connected the Seagate 500gb hard drive via a sata adaptor to my laptop.

but only some of the videos / programme files are visible. the recorded bbc files aren’t visible?

can someone tell me why they aren’t visible, and is there anything that

Are they HD recordings? You might get a more useful answer if you ask the question on then hummy.tv forum.

I don’t want to take up to much of your time, I just wondered if there was a permanent hardware repair that can be done to solve the epg problem on these old pvr’s.

No. The problem is that the hardware was designed when there were fewer channels and it is now short of memory and CPU power and neither can be enhanced. There are plenty of reports that tuning in only three multiplexes gives very acceptable performance but at the cost of limiting the number of available channels.

Have you tried deleting channels you don’t ever watch ?

My understanding is that deleting channels alone does not help. The trick is reducing the number of multiplexes tuned but if the OP wants to be able to watch programmes from all multiplexes then that isn’t an option.

…says 40GB a day over 10 years. So 1/2 the write capacity you quoted but 2x the life. Or does that equate to 80 over 5?

The actual capacity is a fixed number of TerraBytes Written (TBW) so it doesn’t matter how you slice it up in terms of number of years; shorter number of years more GB per day. I would have thought 5 years is a reasonable life for a replacement drive in a PVR. Note my numbers were based on a 256GB drive (the cheapest) but with a 4TB drive the limit is four times as large.

NB I am NOT recommending fitting an SSD just trying to refute the argument that it isn’t feasible.

Also, when the Humax is on it’s continually writing the current programme to disk, as a buffer for rewinding to the start.

SSDs aren’t designed for that kind of usage.

A Samsung 850 Pro is designed for 80GB a day over 5 years so would have a reasonable life time providing the box wasn’t left on 24 hours a day.

I have an FVP 4000T 14 months old and like it except that it is so slow compared to using Win 7 Media Centre.

    1) Would changing the HDD for an SSD help e.g. Crucial MX300 1TB?

No the problem is almost certainly not hard drive related. An SSD would of course be totally silent but the potential performance gains wouldn’t help. If you really feel you must try this, the parameter to look for in an SSD for this application is the total lifetime write capability; last time I looked Samsung Pro drives were best.

A few weeks ago I switched on my device and was informed that I would have to format it. I did this although I would lose approx 350/400 GB of data. All was well for a few days but then the same thing happened. Device worked perfectly until about two in the morning then when I switched back on about nine the same message but this time the device did not format. Device is approx 3.1/2 yrs old and on FHTCP 1.03.12.

I would suggest using the custom formware to investigate and hopefully fix this problem see the FAQ https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/how-to-fix-hard-drive-and-file-system-problems In the worst case a new hard drive will be required which is not a difficult job.

There used to be a company advertising that they did Humax power supply repairs (as opposed to selling a kit of parts) but I can’t find them now.

I suspect that it was this one:

    http://www.free-sat-tv.co.uk/Humax.php?

Yes it sounds right so might be worth the OP contacting them.

An update on this for anyone experiencing a similar problem. Despite the fact that we live only a mile or so from Derby city centre and Derby is covered by East Midlands BBC an aerial installer came round and said that he couldn’t improve on our current set up which is aligned to the West Midlands transmitter at Sutton Coldfield.

Glad you have got an improvement. Have you considered the possibility of having two TV aerials, onepointing at Sutton Coldfield and one at Derby? I have no experience of doing it myself but I have heard of other people doing it. A quick google turned up https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/85644/is-it-possible-to-combine-independent-digital-tv-antennas but there is probably better information out there.

Is the link still active? I couldn’t download the GUI front end.

That may be a problem due to the Forum moving to a new server. If you PM me your email address I can email you a copy.

Because of my experience I will never buy a Humax again until there is an archive facility.

I agree that not having an archive facility is something I couldn’t live with. However in the case of the HDR1100S this is not a decision made by Humax but by Freesat. All the Humax Freeview boxes I have owned have an archive facility although in all cases where HD content is involved then the archive is encrypted and will only play on the original box.

Is there any way to repair the old box if it’s a component?

I think it could be done but you need to find someone with the necessary skills and knowledge to do the initial investigation and then if feasible publish a detailed set of instructions. This is exactly what happened with the problem on the 9200T which caused the clock to fail in standby and hence all recordings. Subsequent to the publication of repair instructions a very substantial number of boxes have been repaired.

Humax don’t want to do it and it could be that it’s more than just a popped resistor as it seems to happen often when people’s drives are nearly full.

is there really any statistical evidence to support that claim that the problem is in any way linked to the amount of data stored on the drive?

It seems very unlikely to me although age of the box is I suspect a factor.

A reset would be an option

Barry can you confirm that a reset on an FVP-4000T does not automatically delete recordings?

If i use the manual scan option , does anyone know what parameters i need to use ?

You need to be aware that COM7 and COM8 are broadcast at significantly lower power (about 40 kW) compared to the main multiplexes (200kW) so reception may be difficult if you are some distance from the transmitter. The channel number for COM8 from Crystal Palace is 35.
