Best to read up on what is necessary to identify the most suitable transmitter and which frequencies to do a manual retune on.
Barry’s FAQ post on the subject is probably the place to start https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/manual-tuning-instructions-1

After transferring all recordings to an external HDD I used Vivard (from Ultimate Boot CD) to perform a low-level format on the HDD, then I used HDD Regenerator which found (and fixed) 4 bad sectors. Afer this I ran HDAT2 (v6.0 beta) and performed the Read/Write/Read/Compare test on the drive (found 1 sector right near the end without an address marker – not entirely sure what that means – and fixed that), and finally I ran h2testw which reported no problems.
Thanks for coming back with a detailed description of what you have done. Did you look at the SMART data and if so how many reallocated sectors were reported? It will be interesting to hear how the drive is performing in a few months time.

To be fair I think most of these problems are not the fault of Humax, the bulk of the programming is written by Linux.
The software on the FVP-5000T will be comprised of three main components: the Linux kernel, a number of Open Source packages and a piece of proprietary software written by Humax. I would very much doubt that any of the issues with box are to do with problems in the standard kernel code although as Humax do make modifications to the kernel, a few problems could be present in those changes. I would suggest the vast majority of issues are in the Humax written code.

My very own unit decided to lose the ability to read my recordings then magically corrected itself after 4 months for around 5-6 months before failing again….seems to me like capacitors going out of tolerance.
I agree it is something going out of tolerance but that doesn’t mean that it has to be a capacitor. Humax have said it was a resistor; I have no reason to believe that is false.

And according to andyfras on these very forums who fixed a 1010 it most certainly was the capacitors (surface mount)
But the 1010 he fixed wasn’t suffering from the total inability to access the hard drive which is the problem being discussed in this thread.

It does make you wander though, if this is a known problem, why don’t they rectify it?
I n what way (other than what they are doing) would you like them to rectify it?

… and when a series comes to an end … when does it get deleted from the schedule list ? I came across 6 of them at the end of the list that all said “getting information” instead of the next transmission date.
The problem is that the Feeview specification doesn’t allow a broadcaster to send an end of series flag. Some times series take breaks for a few weeks and so the box does the best it can and deletes series recording when the series ID becomes invalid which will be 13 weeks after the last episode.
I have no idea why I would want to access my TV recorder from my PC. I did try it but found that WMP would not play the files anyway.
I don’t either (most of the time) but a fair number of people do. I would guess the WMP issue is a missing CODEC that you could install or try the VLC player.
I do not know whether to send the box back or not
My advice is that if you are not happy then send it back particularly if you have reason to believe that there is something better out there.

The box did prompt for another retune this evening due to a ‘Network Change’ so I did do another smart retune to be on the safe side.
I am struggling to reconcile that observation with Barry’s comment in post 8 that the box won’t prompt for a retune. It sounds as though in the right circumstances it will prompt?

Although not available any more the Tvonics DTR-HD500 PVR could be set to update channels automatically, I have one of these and it works very well and it also retains the schedule.
The Humax HDR-FOX T2 with the custom firmware retains the schedule after a retune. It has always been a mystery to me why Humax didn’t implement the feature.

I would like to change the hard drive in my 2000T. What is the best one to get and is it and easy job?
As with all things it depends on your level of experience but if you are familiar with changing hard drives in computers it is very straightforward. Disconnect from mains, take off the lid; disconnect the cables to the drive, take the carrier and drive out, take old drive out of the carrier (there is more than type of carrier), fit the new drive and replace the carrier, connect the cables, replace lid and turn on the power and the box will ask to format the drive. Job done.
As for hard drive type you should select one designed for PVR usage; I suggest a Seagate drive either 1 TB drive or 2 TB drive. I have the 2TB drive fitted to an HDR-FOX T2 and it coming up to 24,000 power on hours with zero problems (I use the custom firmware to keep an eye on the SMART data so I am confident about that statement).

All the same signal issues are still happening though unfortunately, i do get 100% for quality when doing signal tests but the signal strength always seems to be 69-71%.
I am definitely connected to the storton transmitter which is the closest to me in Liverpool.
69-71% signal strength should work properly (is that across all the multiplexes?) and I certainly wouldn’t be thinking about a signal booster. Are you confident the HDMI cable is well screened and well separated from the HDMI lead?

I just checked and C59 which I can’t manually load is the main one that contains many of the channels I can’t get – why is that?
Which transmitter please? It would also help if you could quote some signal strength and quality figures for a few of the channels you can receive?

Just set up our new FVP 5000T PVR but having problems setting up Live TV/TV Guide apps. Both state that “mobile and Humax are not on same network “. However the assigned IP addresses are clearly on the same subnet. Am I missing something?
So please tell us what the assigned IP addresses, netmasks, gateway addresses and DNS adresses are? What make and model of router do you have?

If you had read my post you must surely appreciate that I am fully aware of the procedure for a manual tune and know the multiplexes used by Sutton coalfield and The Wrekin both of which are on a similar bearing from my house, The Wrekin being much closer.
The problem is on all other TVs and recorders which I have had although an auto scan can opt for Sutton Coalfield I can remedy this by doing a manual scan on the T4000 it does not always work.
OK so you can’t make scanning a single multiplex work; I have never tried to do it. Does a full manual scan as described in the FAQ work?

Similar problem trying to tune to prefered transmitter
On most digital tv devices where there is a choice of transmitters it is possible to simply do a manual tune to to the multiplexes used by your prefered transmitter. This is not the case with the T4000 as it seems to be a case of computer say NO.
Have you read Barry’s FAQ on manual tuning for the FVP-4000T? See https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/manual-tuning-instructions-1 If these instructions are not working then can you explain the problem please?
