Have made many attempts to add apps from the app market but have not been able to succeed.
Please tell us what app are you trying to add to which model of Humax box.

I have turned on the server, samba, and FTP. I have told win 7 to discover devices, started windows media player and told it about my video and photo files.
Do you SMB 1.0 enabled on your Windows 7 PC? I suspect that even if you can get SAMBA working then the content may still be encrypted as whatever magic mechanism is being used to do the decryption is (according to the FAQ on this site) only available in Windows 8 and later.

I have quite an old freeview recorder and have just recently encountered the same problem.
Start off by telling us which model of recorder you have please.

SSD drives are not designed for constant writes and re-writes.
A good quality modern SSD drive should easily manage at least five years. The lack of TRIM support would reduce performance.
You would also not see any speed increase.
I agree; the only potential advantage is absence of hard drive noise.

The only thing I can think of is co channel interference under high pressure atmospheric uplift conditions. Because signals travel further a distant transmitter using the same uhf carriers can interfere with your local transmitter.
But if the problem was co-channel interference, how would you explain the observation that playing programs with a small time shift works properly? NB I have run out of ideas.

A further observation on the issue this morning, pausing live TV (even for a few seconds) and re-starting produces normal video/sound until the stop (return to live TV) is activated.
So that doesn’t fit with the theory of it being a buffer problem. Maybe somebody else has a better idea.

New Features and Improvements
-. Recording problem is fixed.
Anyone any idea what the recording problem was? Doesn’t seem to have fixed the EPG population issue.
It was an issue that only affected very recent boxes; I would guess some component change (most likely hard drive type) during the production run.

Thanks for the reply and interest.
Signal strength is 68
Signal quality is 100
Indications from box on BBC-1 HD
Those values are exactly as they should be. My only thought is that perhaps the area of the hard drive that is used by the buffer that provides the ability to pause or rewind live TV is developing a fault that is causing the hard drive to retry. How long are the pauses?

My HDR-1800T is freezing then re-starting (video & audio)every few seconds while playing live TV (any channel, recording & play back is still perfect, signal strength/quality has not changed, TV on same antenna system is perfect, no pixilation observed, just freezing/re-starting.
Not sure what is going on. Please can you give the values for signal strength and quality?

If it’s merely unlinking the data, why does it take a very long time to process a set of recording deletions set up from the Foxsat-HDR File manager option ?
The pointers to the actual data locations are held in inodes and the way Humax format the hard drive results in a lot of inodes. Manually formatting the hard drive with much fewer inodes should result in better deletion performance.
. The data is still sitting there on disk, but the link to it is removed.
There are tools to attempt to recover the data but how successful they might be will depend on a number of factors.
So is post 23 accurate or just plain wrong ?
Accurate.

The software side of things, GUI, etc, and operation of unit. Does seem slow though.
I am afraid that is true of the FVP models but generally they are usually reliable at recording.

Unlike windows Linux FS deletions take longer because the actual recording data is removed.
Can you provide any evidence for that claim? I think you will find the data is still on the hard drive and the slowness is due to the inefficiency of the Ext2/Ext3 file system when dealing with large files.

I have bought this freeview box as wanted a recordable one and am only picking up 6 channels when searching, i have had no problems with signal on old box and use exactly the same hdmi and aerial cables so have no clue as to why
Please start by telling us the signal strength and quality as reported by the Humax (Menu button>Settings>System>Signal detection)?

Does anyone know more about this software update?
My assumption is that it is to fix the problem reported in the first post of the this thread with very recently purchased boxes. waiting with interest to hear if it fixes the problem for wellnevermind.

Some SD files play ok but the HD files in particular don’t play, the screen shows no signal available. I presume this is an encription/decription problem – any comments?
Yes the HD recordings are encrypted and will only play on the box that made the recording. There is a way to remove the encryption from the HD recordings but the rules of the Forum do not allow it to be discussed.
