It will then format normally and everything is fine – except it will not reformat a second or third time. I have tried a replacement drive which exhibits the same symptoms. Is this a generic fault with the FVP4000T, or is it peculiar to my machine?
Do you get an error message when you attempt to format; if so what does it say? Why do you need to format so frequently? Next time you have it attached to the PC could you use something like Crystal Diskinfo to look at the SMART data and post the results here so we can see the health of the drive.
Incidentally is there any real difference between the two machines other than cosmetic? They seem to behave exactly the same to me and obviously run identical software.
They are very similar (early FVP-5000T were shipped with motherboards labelled FVP-4000T). My view is that it was a marketing attempt by Humax to get away from the terrible reputation of the FVP-4000T.

If a remove the Humax harddrive is it possible to connect the Humax harddrive directly to the IDE Cable of a PC that runs windows 10?
You can connect direct to an IDE capable PC; you will also need to connect the power to the drive.

Yes I tried reboot win xp 64bit, it simply dont work with any OP system
Perhaps you are beginning to understand why the most common suggestion here is to use humaxrw which does work on modern versions of Windows and also with Linux.

Tried the Humax Media eLinker in win XP and the window opens, but I cant connect or see the humax harddrive, it just says something like no connection restart your reciver, do I have to install some other driver also for it to work???
To long ago for me to remember with any certainty but I don’t think so unless your XP is 64 bit.

2 I am using a high quality Digisignal cable with Digisignal adapter-the tv tuner is using a much cheaper rf connector from the same caravan aerial.
The rf built in female connector on the Humax box is showing signs of wear and tear. While the connector appears to be a quality Humax item the core connector has spread
Have you worked out what caused it to spread?

Which pins does the jumper go on? Articles suggest 5 and 6
I agree that it is pins 5 and 6.

so fingers crossed when it arrives I’ll be able to transfer the 8 hour recording and free up some space on the 5000T!
Is it an SD (Standard Definition) recording? If so it should be very straightforward but be patient as it is a lot of data to transfer through a USB connection. As a matter of interest do you have a PC running Windows 10?

It works in a DOS window but is there a windows xp GUI that makes it easier?
No. This is 15 year old software. I have found a copy of Humax Media eLinker if you want to try that although my recollection is that it was pretty dire. Your alternative is to go back to the starting point of this discussion and buy the IDE to USB adapter so that you can use humaxrw with its front end.

I am totaly lost here, what software do I need to make it work on my XP PC??? could someone link me directly to the software?
Any of the options people have suggested would work. MediaController is probably the best option. The link in Luke’s post is broken. I have a copy of a slightly older version of MediaController; send me a Private Message with your email address and I will send it to you.

I have a Humax 5000T and I’m wanting to transfer some recordings to an external hard drive. I contacted Humax and they suggested that I buy a ‘WD Elements Easy add-on desktop storage’ as they had tested it with the 5000T. Before I actually purchase it, I was wondering if someone could answer a couple of questions for me?
1 – I have a recording on the 5000T which is 8 hours long, am I able to transfer that to the external hard drive?
Providing the USB Hard drive is formatted NTFS or Ext3 then yes; the link you provided says it is NTFS formatted out of the box. Also the recording must be SD for the encryption to be removed. HD recordings will copy but only play back on the Humax.
2 – Once I have transferred the recordings over to the external hard drive would I be able to watch the recordings from the external hard drive on the tv or would it just be for the computer?
You would need to tell us about the TV. If it is a smart TV then there is a reasonable chance it will play as is and if it doesn’t play then it can probably be manipulated into a format that will play.

Thanks for getting back to me. What make of power line adapters do you think I need
My advice is to contact BT support and see if they can tell you how to turn off the power saving feature. If that doesn’t work then TP-Link adapters can have the power saving feature turned of by using an app that you can download from their support site. I am sure some other makes will also allow power saving to be turned off.

So the recordings are encrypted to the actual unit and not the model?
Correct.
Can they be copied off somehow, resaved and then copied back?
You can copy them off no problem but they will remain encrypted whatever you do other than decrypt them. As far as I know, there is currently no way to decrypt without the original box. There has been progress in removing the encryption from recordings made on older Humax models so it isn’t completely impossible that someone will work out how to do it in the future for the FVP models.

My fvp4000 unit failed and so in order to keep my recordings, I bought a second hand fvp5000 and put the 4000 hard disc in the 5000 unit. I can see the recordings and delete them but cannot play them. I can also record and play new recordings.
Is there any way to play the old recordings?
The problem is that the recordings are encrypted with a key that is unique to the machine that made them. The only way to play them will be to get the FVP-4000 working again. What was the problem with it?

I use BT 1000 power line adapters.
OK, I can’t find much technical information about them. When you lose Internet connection have you tried unplugging and then plugging in the powerline adapters to see if that restores the internet connection. If it does it points the finger at the powerline adapters as the problem. With some makes of powerline adapter you can turn off sleep mode which often helps with connectivity to the Humax.
