InactiveHi everyone
Three days ago my daughter was on demand and thw box froze and would not respond. Nothing would free it! Except switching it off.
On reboot it would not respond to the remote. Unless you pressed the button repeatedly and only then it would happen very seldom.
Changed batteries. even left it with no batteries for it to decharge for half hour. Still did not work!
So I bought a new remote. Same thing there too. No response.
I’ve done the press ok and zero thing too.
I’ve checked the led on a digital camara and both remotes work????
It looks like it’s the box?
Out of warranty!!!!!!!!!!
Any ideas please ?

InactiveThanks for you reply,
I’ve done that I’m afraid, even had to do it agin with Humax over the phone.
They think its the box as neither my old or new remote work.
Old remote was the old style without the light up buttons and the new one is with STB button that lights up.
I just wondered if this might be a known fault??

InactiveThere are sometimes posts on this subject. General advice is don’t play with the remote as soon a pictures and sound come it – I think some of the boot processes are not yet complete.
I usually press the exit button and wait for the min guide to disappear.
With the new remote the STB button must of course light up or the commands will be sent to the TV.
Last resort is the reset to default settings.

InactiveThanks for your help.
Alas though I can’t even access the menus to do a reset to default settings!!!
All my wifes recordings are on there too so I need to work a way around the encryption too.
I read that samsung allshare will download to pc using DLNA.
Sounds great but I can’t get the allshare to see the Humax.
Me thinks that may be a choice in the Humax network menu!!!!!

Unless you can find someone who has actually done this, I would take it with a pinch of salt. Allshare won’t let you copy programmes recorded to USB drive by its own TV, so I’m doubtful you could use it to copy programmes recorded to a hard drive by a Humax box.
Depending who you bought it from, it might be worth contacting the retailer.

InactiveHi James,
Contacted Humax as thats where it came from direct.
It’s out of the two year warranty by about a year so they are not interested

InactiveHumax-the-manufacturer may no longer have any interest but Humax-the-retailer don’t have that luxury. The retailer has to abide by the Sale of Goods Act, which expects products to last a reasonable time after purchase. You can get advice from Citizens Advice as to how to frame a letter. There are templates on their website, and they have a helpline.
It’s good that you rang Humax and they told you it was probably the box, and you posted that in this thread.

InactiveSuggestion – try disconnecting the hard drive internally and then try a reboot. (Screws within legs). power down for 5 mins before opening case.
There is a fair chance it will boot.

InactiveHi done that.
It boots.
As I’m a pc repair man as my second job I thought I’d tr and hook up the HDD to have a nose and may do a backup?
I would say that that HDD is knacked.
Plugged in and it wont power up at all??
Could this have caused an issue??
Ive fitted an old known working one from stock but no difference to the way the remote behaves??????

InactiveThe disk you tried – it was un-partitioned? Did the Humax format it?
I recall that it does want confirmation to do this – I think that it might be possible via the front panel.
The old drive could be drawing more power than usual – an AV type drive is normally used.
Think the old drive could be corrupt – may be worth deleting all the partitions and reinserting it.
As soon as you get any control over the unit I would reset it to factory default.

InactiveHi Repassac,
Thanks for your reply.
Turns out my Atapi Bridge psu was duff!!!
Soldered it up and now the drive sounds like it spins up okay.
It’s a seagate pipeline 1TB.
My Windows 7 won’t see it.
Some of my other tools do but it’s showing up as a FAT16??
If my memory seves me right that should be a miximum of 2Gb so a bit confused. Especially as I thought these boxes used EXT2 or 3.
Looks like I will have to pull an old computer and install Linux to really see whats going on?????
As far as the remote goes I can get it to work if I reapatedly press the one button that I want. Oh and yes it formatted the new drive after I got there which took about ten minutes of button pressing!!!!
AAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just rechecking your model…. OK if the unit formatted the drive there will be several partitions (perhaps 4) I don’t remember exactly. The recordings partition is on an encrypted filing system, the user one on an EXT3 or EXT4 partition that a PC can see with the correct drivers. Your choice of drive should be very good.
There are drivers you can get for the PC but a Linux boot on a USB stick is what I use when necessary.

InactiveOkay. I’ve got a g parted bootable usb somewhere, I’d forgotten about it!!
At the moment EXT2extention manager for windows sees the partition type as FAT16 and the file system a RAW for 931 GB.
I’ll Gparted a go tonight.
Thanks
James

InactiveHi Repassac,
Next update.
I checked the new hard drive and you are quite correct.
It has three partitions now that the box has formatted it.
All EXT3
One of 1Gb, One of 921Gb and One at the end of 10Gb.
So I Rechecked the old one and it spins up okay.
How ever it is failing to read so that is the problem I think.
A duff hard drive!! Don’t know if that failing caused the remote issue but the silver lining is that after I called Humax last, out of the blue, they emailed me today to arrange an exchange on Monday!!!!!!!!
Don’t help our lost recordings though!!
I’m going to set the hard drive on a more detailed hard drive program called Victoria. May take a few hours to run but I’ll update soon.
James
