ModeratorA little more info would help
Did the upload of software proceed as per the instructions?
Did you wait until software update complete was displayed on TV, and/or END on the front display?
Have you removed the pendrive?
What exactly is happening when you now try to boot the device?

When I turn the unit on it shows the freeview logo and then just a black screen for about 5 minutes then the subtitles appear with no sound or picture.
The upload of software didn’t work either held the down arrow when switching on and it just flicks endlessly through the channels.
I haven’t removed the pen drive.
The installation won’t start never mind finish.
It really should be made clear to purchasers that if you are not extremely technically astute you won’t be able to operate this.

The box has to completely in sby before you can update by usb. If you look at the pen drive on a PC does it have a recycle bin on it ?
If so chack the box doesn’t have a recording schedule due or active. Put it in sby and leave it for 15 minutes.
Reformat the pen drive and copy the .hdf to it again.
Follow the instructions again (if the usb drive access led lights when you plug it in it’s not in full sby and you will have to start again).

InactiveUpdates on the box have caused regular problems from launch. The present one is by no means unique. On the discontinued Freesat forum there were many requests for a Manual or Automatic update selection at the users choice. The Automatic offering the user a yes/no to update, rather than the Freesat method of updating in the background. I have many technology items and the Humax boxes are unique in being the only ones that do not offer a choice. The continued refusal to offer this is arrogance on the part of Freesat.

I’ve no idea what you are talking about. I’ll return my 2 boxes and dongles and go back to sky.

Big mistake. Unless you are planning to pay thru the nose for SKY-Q then you’re taking a step backwards

With the greatest of respect, I’ve currently got subtitles with no sound or picture and I’ve spent the whole weekend trying to resolve this. Not sure how much I can go backwards from here!?!

ModeratorYou box would appear to have not updated.
As Graham has stated check pendrive for recycle bin file if present delete it and try the update again.
Remove power to the unit (ie remove mains power)
Insert Pendrive.
Power up unit simultaneously pressing the Channel down button on front of unit.
When update appears on front display you can stop pressing.
When END appears on front display, remove pendrive and reboot unit.

Well you could start with my post and explain which bits you don’t understand ?
It’s not rocket science.
When posting we have to make some basic assumptions that most people using a PC would understand. I take it you must know what a usb stick is ?
If we posted every detail of what to do, most would say we were being patronising.

What can I say. I’ve done this several times before and my experience has been that if you follow the instructions it’s all done in 5 mins. As Graham says, if you don’t understand then ask.

I’ve deleted recycle bin removed the power supply and replaced it while holding the down arrow key for a full 5 minutes at no stage does the word update appear on the box or the tv. The box starts with a picture but no sound and the picture cuts out after a couple of minutes to leave just subtitles.
Yes i have a usb stick which I’ve downloaded the update onto, I had to copy it from the Dropbox as I couldn’t see an option to choose where to download to.
I appear to be giving the impression of being intentionally difficult and thick, I’m certainly not the former and I hope not the latter. I do however feel that, having forked out for a wifi stick, an easier method for updating software could be found. This has been very frustrating and I’m now spending the evening reading SPOTY. Frankly in this day and age that isn’t a sentence I ever thought I’d type.

One step at a time.
If you put the stick in a PC browse the files what are the full filenames on the stick ?
Before you do this make sure that Windows is set to not hide known file extensions (the characters after the dot in the file name).

InactiveIve finally managed to do the upgrade and the picture is back and the remote is responsive. It’s still taking 5 minutes to boot and I’ve got no sound, but it’ll have to do as no time to sort pre xmas.

Moderator5 minutes is not right, I would try a factory reset now.

Excuse me if this is obvious… but you have turned up the volume on the Humax R/C to max 50 and controlling volume via the TV R/C?
