Perhaps a list of TV’s (make and model) that do and do not have issues might be a more productive approach. It’s pretty clear the issue is failure to complete HDCP handshake with specific TV’s. Strangely it seems that some TV’s from the same makers work OK and others do not. If anyone uses the box via a AV receiver and has or has not issues posting details of amp and TV could be useful.
On a minor point (but similar), I recently changed my AV receiver from a Sony to a Yamaha Aventage. Both my HDR FOX T2’s and a HDR1000S now produce a short black screen just after replay of a programme finishes as the video switches to the recorded programme list.
If it is this HDCP handshake, then why does it behave the same when connecting to the SCART input of the TV?
The posts I have seen say composite video is available, in the absence of a hdmi connection. If it’s not it’s a different issue.

InactiveUPDATE. I telephoned Humax Support this morning and informed them that their suggested solution had not been successful.Their advisor confirmed that they were aware of the problem and hoped to have a solution soon. As I am considering returning the product to Argos (!) for a refund I asked if I could be sent an e-mail confirming that there was a fault with the machine to avoid any hassle. This was agreed and an e-mail typed while we were speaking ,which impressed me as very good service.
I am undecided what to do now. As it is ,the machine is a pain to use but although the epg is not as good as my previous 9000 and the Genre search is pretty useless I would be happy to keepit if this major problem was sorted pretty soon. What could I get as an alternative?
E-Mail extract:
Thank you for contacting Humax.
As discussed on the phone this is an email as requested. There is a current issue with our FVP model which is causing the unit not to boot up when it has been recording in standby. To enable use of this product when this occurs it requires a switch off at the mains. We are currently investigating this issue and hope to release a software update in the near future. [/i]

InactiveMine will sometimes not turn on even if it is not recording – see FVP-4000T will not “activate” with remote control
It is not a disastrous workaround to power it OFF > ON to get it to work even if it is recording – it would miss only a short part of the recording(s) while booting and until you start it recording again.

InactiveI agree that powering off and on again is a workaround to this problem but surely this is not acceptable with a new product. The fact that it only affects some machines is not relevant. The product is not 100% ” fit for purpose ” and it is questionable if it should continuue to be marketed as Humax are well aware of this fault.

InactiveWe’ve just had this AGAIN! That’s the 8th time since we bought the unit back in November.
Interestingly, the if I press the volume buttons the colume display comes up on the screen. This seems to make me think it’s not a handshake issue becuase the Humax is showing something on the screen.

InactiveHarryhornby – I have been in contact with Humax to report the fault and their recommendation is to unplug the HDMI cable and use the composite connection (the yellow RCA cable plus the L and R audio cables). I think this is because the HDMI can be used to send “turn on” and “turn off” signals, so Humax wants to rule this out as a possible cause.
Can you confirm whether you get the same problem (black screen, volume bars appear when pressing the volume button) when connected with composite.
fabia – sorry, my “workaround” post was based on the fact that I am sure Humax will quickly issue a software update to fix it once they have identified the problem.
As for its being “fit for purpose”, anyone with a little knowledge of contract law will tell you that only a foolish manufacturer would ever claim that a product was “fit for purpose” or put “fit for purpose” in his terms and conditions because the “purpose” can be set by the buyer! I very, very much doubt that Humax has ever claimed it was fit for purpose.

InactiveHi Fabia,
Thanks for the feedback, but I’m afraid I don’t have any RCA cables.

I could buy some, wonder if Humax will pay for them while I carry out testing for them……

I see that the Humax email says the problem is “causing the unit not to boot up when it has been recording in standby.
This may explain why mine occasionally does not turn on event though it is not then recording – I record a lot in standby.

InactiveI’m not sure what is going on at Humax Towers. However, the 4000T does appear to be experiencing more problems than I have seen for a long time in a product release of this type (if the current crop of posts are anything to go by).
It would appear that in common with lots of other tech manufacturers these days Humax are beta testing their products on the early adopters. One would have to conclude from the amount of issues that the 4000T was not ready for market.

I would agree to an extent.
Coincidence that the driving force in getting things done on the technical and support side left the company just as this product was launched?
My opinion – I think not a coincidence.

This is the sort of thing that happens when the bean counters are in charge rather than the guys who know the products.
Sad really because it takes a very long time to build up a great reputation and a very short time to destroy it.

ModeratorNothing to do with bean counters on this occasion.

InactiveAn update on my parallel HDMI/RCA work around described in post #33
Over the Christmas period the 4000T was heavily used (!) for recording and switched on numerous times when a recording was already in progress. On almost all occasions the work around ensured that the 4000T would switch on for live viewing.
There have been very very few occasions when it would not. These appear to happen if we try to turn on the 4000T as a recording is starting or in the few minutes after. Give it a further few minutes and the 4000T will then turn on for live viewing.
What I have found interesting however is when the 4000T would not turn on, the following proceedure also remedied the problem immediately:
-
Turn on TV
Switch TV’s input to its own internal turner (Ie. not HDMI or scart)
Turn on 4000T

Excellent analysis! My TV is similarly a Panasonic Viera and I have had problems with HDMI (though I am not usually recording when I switch on in the evening) when I have the Viera Link = ON (ie the HDMI controls are activated).
I am in communication with Humax about mine and have sent your diagnosis and workaround to Humax support and pointed Humax to the forum.
My remote control seems very fast. I also wonder if I am having finger trouble by keeping the Power ON button on the remote control pressed for too long, so the PVR comes ON and is promptly switched OFF. If I press and hold a digit, or press and hold GUIDE, the repeats get sent very quickly.
