Hate to say this but my problem is still the same. I have tried all the suggestions and still not fixed. I can get iplayer on ch 901 but due to UTVs reluctance to allow the ITV player here in N. Ireland I can’t get Ch 5 on demand. I live in hope that some day the tech people who created the problem will correct their mistakes!

Looks like people are discussing it as a DNS problem (entering manual IP address has fixed for my friend using 8.8.8.8 as DNS), are you using wifi stb or connected direct using a ethernet cable to your router (i.e. not using a homeplug adapter)?

    damian,

I my reply I excluded routers running firmware such as DD-WRT or ones that you can install a full DNS and service(s). They are not found in most home environments.

As you say the majority (the overwhelming majority) of routers present to the user, their own interface and do not allow access at the Linux level (which most run). I have not seen anywhere on a router specification a DNS cache mentioned. If I try a nslookup from my router I just get timeouts to the server command.

In any case what I cannot see how a IP address change could effect some users only for several weeks.

If the HDT-10x0S’s were not locked down and you had access at Linux level there is not a lot extra you could see – about the only piece of info I can imagine is the results nslookup or ipconfig commands. What I do know is that a factory rest on a working unit did not cause it to stop working.

I believe freesat’s servers are managed by Peer1.

This thread has quite some speculation in it (by myself as well), Including Humax hardware changes, DNS changes. The only facts seem to be that it was working for all before the new showcase, and ceased working for some after. Additionally freesat hold their hands up to be their problem.

Hopefully the problem is now resolved – I see little point in continuing this discussion.

It is more probable that simply reselecting connect automatically (the last freesat advice) would have also solved it.

    Suggest you contact freesat.

For all you guys who are still having problems with on demand this worked for me: SETTINGS – SYSTEM SETTINGS – POWER SAVING – Within power saving set automatic power down to Off and standby mode to Normal.

Put freetime box to standby for a few secs then switch on again, on demand should now be available.

    Hi Bilbo

Tried your work around but still no show. Giving up at this point. Have ailed Freesat 3 times and the last reply was the issue was being escalated so I will await another software update or some freak of nature and my system resets itself without my in put. After 66 pages of comments and suggestions I would have thought that the problem would have sorted. As regards it only effecting a few I know of several others who can’t be bothered with forums and just put it down to experience and are the silent minority but Freesats lack of explanation or transparency about the issue is odd! I also note that on googling the issue that there have been recurrent on demand issues over the years with a variety of providers so I guess it’s stability is questionable. If it works why fix it comes to mind so some have lost out. Maybe in the future the proverbial penny will drop on Freesat!

To those who, a number of days ago, suggested I try the Goggle DNS – I did but I didn’t work – wasn’t able to post as I was laid low with a lurgy.

However, all seems to be working now – not something I did – obviously on Freesat’s side.

    Hope it continues to work.

Thanks to all here for the endless suggestions, support.

That’s good news. I don’t suppose we’ll ever know what caused it.

This is still a problem, I just went onto FreeSat’s site which has a section on Humax Issues where they are saying that there are still issues and they are working on it.

I cannot see how this can be so difficult to fix. In my case at least I can restore On Demand by first visiting a previously aired show using the back button on the channel guide and once I have view one, On Demand is again working.

So if they could emulate this when you click on On Demand, then all would probably work again I would think.

Another, possibly better, option than Google’s DNS are the open public DNS servers of OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/opendns-ip-addresses/) which ought to be faster.

    1st DNS server: 208.67.222.222

    2nd DNS server: 208.67.220.220

Very interesting – both hardware and software issues involved, which is one of the possibilities suggested in this thread.

    Quote:
We have identified a number of issues which Freesat and Humax have been working on solving but we are dealing with both hardware and software these are not instant fixes. We also need to make sure that the issues have all been resolved and that the service has been re-tested. We anticipate that this will take a couple of weeks but we are obviously working as hard as we can to reduce these timings.

This message comes up when On Demand is selected from the home menu. It has been a transient problem for a few weeks but today it is particularly persistent.

What is odd about this is:

    – The box is connected to the internet. It says it is. Reconnecting changes nothing.

    – Powering the box down and back up after a minute has no effect.

    – I have rebooted the router and checked that both agree on the local IP address for the box.

    – Showcase will access On Demand players

    – CatchUp TV will access On Demand players, and not just BBC and ITV. If you are lucky you can rummage about a bit and get to the home screen for these on demand players go from there to access any programme they have available. (Can’t see how to get YouTube though.)

    – TV Portal Apps work – for what its worth

    – I can even pair my Freesat box to a Freesat account

Through all this the On Demand option in the home menu says the box isn’t connected to the internet.

I am loathe to try a new setup for the box as I would have to reenter all my recordings.

A similar but not identical problem to mine appears in numerous posts on numerous sites over a long period of time with no clear answer as to why. This is a great little box. Silly that Humax doesn’t fix this problem or at least post some kind of workaround pending an update.

Admin edit: Welcome to our Forum, as there are already a couple of threads related to subject posts merged.

Actually, I’m not sure how to manually set the DNS Server in the Humax Box, doesn’t seem to be any custom settings for it from what I can see. Is there a hidden menu or am I being a little sight challenged today ?
