InactiveIf you downloaded that one from the “By Channels” folder you won’t have seen the converted version. To see the results of conversions you need to look under the “BySeries” or “ByTime” folder.
If a file has been converted by the transcoder the filename would end in “_converted.ts”
So I think you’re comparing the actual SD recording with the converted file, hence the file size difference. Though when you download via the web interface, the file naming *doesn’t* have the “_converted.ts” bit appended.
I’ll try to grab some screenshots later.

The options are just a quick way of finding the file just the same as using the actual box, . Whatever way you use to locate the recording it’s the same file you are using ftp to transfer to whatever folder you have selected on your PC.
Going to try downloading again before having a play with the resolution settings in the WebIf.

ParticipantSecond copy is also 1.2O GB and same download from Webif is just 771MB

ParticipantHad a play with the webif settings.
720 x 576 is the only setting that works. Tried reducing this 544 it said success but did not change anything.
Also tried increasing the video bitrate. It said success but nothing changed,

ParticipantDownloaded again in case one of the accepted changes made any difference. Still 771MB

InactiveI still think you’re comparing two different files. Every single *converted* fine I’ve downloaded through any of the three routes (FTP, Web interface, aura app) have been identical, whether sourced from HD or SD channels.
The file location does make a difference. In the ByChannels view you will only see one copy. In the other two folders you will see two copies, one with the same filename as in the ByChannels view and one with “converted” appended to the file name. Give me 30 minutes and I’ll post to demonstrate.

InactiveActually, I take that back. I can now see “converted” and non-converted versions in all three folders. I must have been making a mistake – however I still stand by the fact that the files which are downloaded from any interface and have been converted are identical in size. There is (obviously!) a difference between the unconverted and the converted ones, but it would make zero sense to have coded the software to store the original AND a converted one for use in the app downloads AND a version to sit on a FTP server for no other good reason. I’m just grabbing screenshots to validate that.

ParticipantA bit lost. I have two files both play back and look the same. So both the same programme. I have repeated the FTP copy to a totally different folder and it’s the same size at 1.20GB.
The bitrate of the FTP file is higher hence the filesize is larger but the actual video is not a higher bitrate it must have extra data in the stream that is not needed.

ParticipantLightbulb Moment – I Have videoredo TV suite 6 an excellent mpeg editor. It can remux and fix errors in mpeg file, As you can see the 1.20GB file is drastically reduced in size.

InactiveOK, just to validate what I'm saying, I've converted both a HD recording (death in paradise) and a SD recording (caught red handed) using the box. I've then logged into the FTP server and can see both the original (unconverted) version and the transcoded (converted) version. Each version has a separate folder, as per the screen shots. I've then downloaded the converted file from the FTP server and downloaded using the "downarrow" link on the Web Control IF onto my PC and taken screenshots of the file properties for each. I've also used the app on my phone to download the same ones and provide screen shots for them. They are all consistent in that the downloaded files are identical in terms of file size. Each route downloads with a different file name:-
FTP server downloads as PROGNAME_CHANNEL_CHANNELID_RECORDINGID_converted.ts
Aura app downloads as RECORDINGID.ts
Web Control IF downloads as PROGNAME.ts
So there should be 10 images here:-
– the file structure of the FTP server showing the two different folders for the converted and unconverted files
– the filename and file size on the FTP server of the two files in both the converted folder and the non-converted folder (4 files)
– the file propoerties of the converted files downloaded by FTP to the PC (filenames conform to the structure above)
– the file properties of the converted files downloaded from the Web Control IF interface (2 files, filenames conform to the structure above)
– the file properties of the converted files downloaded using the Android app (2 files, filenames conform as above, images from screenshots on my phone)

InactiveAnd now the rest
Actually 11 files in total.

InactiveSo all versions identical file sizes. None of them generated different downloadable file sizes.
One other item of note; I’d changed the resolution via the Web Control IF yesterday to 640×360 and the downloaded files have all been processed at that resolution, so changing those numbers does (in my case) appear to have worked.

I did not invent the larger file. It was downloaded direct from the box to a seperate a folder. As shown above it has data in it not actually required,
So it’s a fault with the server software as you can remove the extra data easily leaving a much smaller file.
I have set another BBC1 recording to repeat the download starting with a previously unconverted file. It’s later today so will have another play tomorrow.
