InactiveThis morning I switched on my downstairs PC and again it couldn’t access the internet.
The Humax box’s ethernet connection lights were again flashing continuously.
Tried but failed to wake up the Humax box using the power button on the handset or by holding in the power button on the front.
I pulled out the power lead from the Humax box and after several minutes replaced it. Again, I didn’t power off/on the Netgear switch at position 4).
After powering off/on the Humax box the downstairs PC was immediately able to access the internet again!

InactiveYou are using the BT Hub as a router?
I have a very similar setup to your own, Humax HDR/HB1000 STB boxes routed thru several switches to the router, mixed Netgear and Cisco switches. However, I have a Netgear router in place of the BT box. Occasionally in the evening my Win 7 PC loses the internet connection, I right click the tray icon and select “Troubleshoot problems”, let that run and the internet connection is restored. I have lots of other devices on the LAN but only the PC loses its connection. I’ve not tracked this down but so far have not attributed it to the Humax which prior to my changeover to BT from TalkTalk never gave problems.
So, in your position I would check out “Troubleshoot problems” on the PC without touching the Humax. See how it goes.

InactiveI use the BT HH5 plus homeplugs and TP network switch – Neither my 1000s or any other part of the network cause me issues. The BT HH works better than a Navvy.
I will keep saying it – I cannot see anything in a Humax box that would make it capable of locking up the network in the way described. Rather I think it’s something in the network locking up the Humax.

If the Humax thinks the connection is dropped and reconnected, it will constantly try and re-establish an ip address. This will constantly try and find a DHCP server and then get a lease from it, this will cause a huge amount of network traffic.
The problem is not the Humax “locking up” the network buy why is the Humax thinking it has dropped the connection.
I think this must be some network abnormality, that the Humax picks up.
How many network problems have you seen reported with any Humax unit – 1, this one.

InactiveAs the Humax box was the only thing connected to the Netgear switch at position 4), last night I connected it directly to the Netgear switch at position 3).
This afternoon I checked and there was no netwok activity from the Humax box in standby mode (remember that I had unlinked the Humax with the Freesat Android app several days ago) so I pressed the power button on the remote and this caused the Panasonic TV to power on from standby.
However, the Humax then locked up with the Freetime showing on its LCD screen.
A few minutes later there were shouts from wife upstairs saying she could no longer access the Internet! My PC at position 3) downstairs had also lost its access to the Internet!
I pulled out the power lead from the back of the Humax box and within a few minutes both PCs were able to access the Internet again.
Quote:I think this must be some network abnormality, that the Humax picks up.But if there is a network abnormality why does everything work fine until the Humax box is powered on?
Also, in our front room [position 2), Netgear 8 port switch (see post #14)] there is a BT OpenView (Humax) box connected and it has worked flawlessly since I got it 3 years years ago (BTW, it works brilliantly with the YouView Android app!). It has never complained about any network issues.
BTW, at the very start of trying to solve my network locking up issue I swapped out the BT Hub5 for the old BT Hub3 (plus the Openreach white box) but it made no difference with the network still locking up and so I put the Hub5 back again.

InactiveI suspect the lock-up may be due to the Humax trying to re-establish network connection. Have you tried giving it a fixed IP address? (to see the option – turn off the DHCP server)
You problem is very unusual, seeing what is happening on the network would give a clue – If you want to delve a bit http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=44226

Which remote? The Humax remote? The TV powers up together with the Humax and the Humax locks up? If so I guess you have the Humax linked to the TV with CEC? That suggests to me you may have some localised problem between the TV and the Humax.
I’m no expert on LANs but I spent my entire career in IT and related technologies so have a small claim to knowing something. As I read thru this thread I see that almost every one of your posts is essentially the same. You power up the Humax, you lose internet access on your PCs, so the problem is the Humax. You have not offered any information on how you have isolated the problem. Example, my post above on trouble shooting at the PC being one. Another opportunity is ethernet cable is dirt cheap these days, buy a 30 metre cable and link the Humax to your router across the floor. Does the problem go away? Another you have not mentioned, is your Panasonic TV (associated with the Humax when it locks up) connected to the internet?
You are the only person known to be reporting this problem on forums so you need to do some work on isolating it, or risk buying a new box and find the same problem.

InactiveFor what is worth I would connect the Humax without any other equipment connected to it, either by direct Ethernet cable to your HH5 or the very reliable Homeplug again using Ethernet. I would leave any network switches out of the equation for a few days. That should solve any issues and all you have to do then is replace whatever network switch or other device is causing you this problem – I feel confident it won’t be the Humax.

I will use them to connect the Humax directly to the HH5 upstairs bypassing all the Netgear switches.

InactiveI have my fingers crossed for a successful outcome. Having said that my both my Humax boxes are currently connected into a TP network switch which is in turn connected to a Devolo Homeplug which the HH5 connects to in a different part of our property.

I would take a look at the router traffic.
One possibility is that the Humax thinks the line has dropped, if so it would try and locate and then get a lease from a DHCP server. Nearly all of this traffic are broadcast messages which will be processed by every host of the network.
Hence my suggestion to see if a fixed ip changes things. (it may not the Foxsat still issues a DHCP request before using the fixed ip).

InactiveThe fact that you use the Humax remote to start up both the TV and Humax box (which then locks up) suggests a CEC (in Panasonic its Viera) link. Switch it off in the TV settings menu.

Switch it off in the TV settings menu. The Panasonic TV’s Viera link is set to Player1 which is HDMI1 and has the Samsung Blu-ray player connected. The Humax box is connected to HDMI2 and the Amazon Fire box connected to HDMI3.
See the forum post that I started on 11 November 2014 (https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/hdr-1000s-software-version-uksfaa-20201-problem) on why I had to move the Humax box from HDMI1 to HDMI2 because of it being linked to the Freesat Android app.
Starting up my Amazon Fire box also wakes up the Panasonic TV.
Powering on the Humax box with the Humax remote and it then waking up the Panasonic TV is normal behaviour and this has been how it has worked since I moved the Humax box from HDMI1 to HDMI2 back in November 2014.

I never have my Panasonic TV wake up any of my devices or vice-versa – always prone to giving you problems. As for the Freesat app – spawn of the devil, I soon got rid of that too, always trying to wake up the Humax every 20 mins or so.
Just make it totally unlinked to anything and when you get your Homeplugs use those then report back.

There have been various s/w changes to the Humax, including one in late Dec 2015 that caused problems with various TVs. You are not going to find out if CEC is an influencing factor unless you switch it off.
