I beg to differ
Yes if you’re lucky your device “just will not work” but as an ex pc engineer I have encountered several USB ports ruined due to overloading & in this case the manufacturer has every right to invalidate the warranty.
Using a powered drive will avoid this possible problem & this is probably the reason Humax Tech Support advised me in January not to use an unpowered drive.
I have to disagree again (as a chartered electrical engineer). A properly designed USB port is current limited at the max supported output current, no matter how low the load resistance (including a full short circuit) it cannot output more current than it’s designed to deliver. If the usb port is destroyed by attempting to pull more current than the design limit. It’s either not fit for purpose or faulty. No matter how you power the device it’s always possible for the current output pins to be short circuited by a faulty or accidentally damaged cable.
Example

I regulary connect a usb3 (usb2) compatible drive to the usb ports on any of my Humax boxes that have a media player capability. I imagine thousands of other owners do the same. A HDR FOX T2 and a Foxsat-HDR are designed to allow archiving SD content to these devices, and over many years this has not been an issue. My 2008 Foxsat-hdr is still used every day.

So if I take this?
And this caddy?
Will I be good to go?
I see a problem with the caddy – see tech note 5
“capacité jusqu’à 500G”
This looks OK to me (unpowered). http://www.amazon.fr/LUPO-externe-bo%C3%AEtier-versions-disponibles/dp/B0030YBLPQ/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1437852361&sr=8-6&keywords=caddy+2.5

InactiveHi, I have received my HD :http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B006IMFT32/ref=pe_386181_51767671_TE_dp_1
and thecaddie:
http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B004K2Y18Q/ref=pe_386181_51767671_TE_dp_1
Unfortunately the caddie is way too small for the disk!
The disk measures 10/15cm and the caddie only 7.5/12cm. I’ll try and send the caddie back but how do I find one big enough for the HD? In the détails actual size is not mentioned.
Sorry to bother you all, and thanks for the advice!

InactiveThe disk you have is a 3.5 inch drive.
“WD AV-GP WD10EURX – Disque dur – 1 To – interne – 3.5” – SATA 6Gb/s – mémoire tampon : 64 Mo”
Your Caddy is for a 2.5 Inch Drive.
“LUPO USB 2,5 pouces disque dur HDD externe Caddy Case boîtier (SATA + IDE, USB 2.0 et 3.0)”
Try adding “3,5 USB” to your search string and be careful of the 2,5 inch ones some of which are still selected.

InactiveOk thanks,
I’ve looked for a 3.5 caddy which is not easy to find on french websites and it seems that some people have ordered them and they weren’t compatible. I’ve found this:
Or do you think it would be better to exchange the 3.5 HD for a 2.5?
Thanks

That’s a device to mount a 3.5 inch drive in a standard drive bay in a desktop PC.
Here’s a typical one (note you will have use a power supply for a 3.5″ disk (provided with the caddy).
You can though buy slot in cradles that support both 2.5″ and 3.5″ drives.

I’ve found this, which would come with a french plug:
Would that do the trick?

It looks fine but I did not see an indication that it was powered.
What about this:

My schoolboy French isn’t up to Repassacs who lives in France
, but yes that should work just fine with a SATA 3.5″ Hard Disk.

InactiveHi again,
First of all thanks for all the advice! I finally received a bigger caddy, and with some help managed to install it. It’s now functioning and I’m able to record. However, I cannot record and watch another channel at the same time. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to allow me to watch another channel simultaneously?
Thanks in advance!

ParticipantYou only have one tuner. This restricts you to viewing a 2nd channel sharing a transponder with the channel you are recording. The programme up/down keys will cycle through the available channels.
The static version (Excel(.xls) or HTML(viewable in a browser) from here
https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/what-can-i-record-and-watch-using-1-or-2-cables
details which channels share transponders.
