This problem does seem to be all about the failure to populate Showcase. If the Freesat servers succeed in loading the current Showcase information, then On Demand gets populated and Bob is your interactive uncle. But if Showcase fails to populate, the box interprets that as a “not connected” error and gives up on both Showcase and On Demand.
Why it seems to manifest in new boxes remains a mystery but since it doesn’t afflict all new boxes it might well be related to user setup or prior use.
That’s my current theory.
That theory fits with my experience posted here…
…on my 2 year old box. So not confined to new boxes. This is related to the recent s/w update.
I just now experimented with turning everything off and then (after a wait) bringing the 1000S up first, and then the network. I got exactly the same results as you describe (1000S does not automatically connect whn the network comes up), so I would say your box is in the same status as mine – fully functional. The afflicted boxes are unable to use Showcase / OnDemand even though the connection is active.

Does not explain why most users have no problems with on-demand and showcase.
See now you say most are not, but so far judging by this thread it seems that it’s only yourself and Graham that haven’t experienced any issues so far.
So I’d say it’s the opposite and most users are having problems.

Only a handful of users have reported in this forum that they were having this problem.
Of those, several later reported all was now well.

The box will be more happy if you have a fully working network/internet connection and boot STB up with this. Leave it on full screen without pressing any buttons for a short while, if it needs to down load updated data. Press Home and On Demand always works for me.
So im trying to say after watching tv for a while i have now never seen a problem from Friday.

That’s arguable since previously the box would connect to the newly present network and issue a message to that effect. The recent s/w update has changed that, which is the point I was making. Since a change is evident it might be construed that other effects are present also.

Very few people without problems post.
I remember a customer service engineer commenting that he sees significant more problems on one model rather than another.
He of course never sees ones without a problem.
He also did not know that unit he saw most sold nearly twenty times the other model.
Edit: your problems do appear to be a little unique and changeable.
I am sure you have tried a factory reset and a power cycle – have you tried them one after the other? (Factory reset first).

A very valid point which needs to be noted and resolved.
It is however not the same problem as most have/had in this thread.

InactiveREPASSAC – 1 hour ago » …You are somewhat unusual in that you power up your unit with the network off…
That might be true within the narrow confines of those who contribute to this forum. I seriously doubt it in the broader user community.
As per my other post…
…once again Freesat have delivered s/w which gives me a box which does not perform in the same way as every other unit of technology that I have. Tiresome.

Well, I agree that if you previously found your box would keep searching and reconnect automatically, and now it doesn’t, that’s an observable change in behaviour. It doesn’t sound very logical to construe the presence of other effects, which haven’t been observed. Which effects are you construing?
Most software updates do result in changes in behaviour.

InactiveSome more experimenting…
As I reported, yesterday the box was not connecting to a newly present network (as it did previously). Now this afternoon it is connecting when I switch on the network (and reporting that via the pop-up). However, the backward guide is not populated and Showcase tells me I must connect to the internet (despite Settings showing that I am connected).
So power off the box and the network, bring up the network first followed by the box and everything is OK with OD and Showcase.
So I see two effects…
1) The connection to the network is not consistent after powering up the box first followed by the network. Clearly demonstrated.
2) The network needs to be powered up first for the box to connect and for OD and Showcase to work properly. Clearly demonstrated.
Both effects are changes to the previous behaviour.

I said might be construed. I was merely speculating on a possible cause.

Having spent most of my career in the IT industry I’m well aware of that.

Interesting. I tried it again, and again I got no pop-up or automatic connection when the network came up. I again had to go into Network Connections to get connected. After I did so, Showcase populated but the On Demand player icons were black, as has been reported by others. Functional – at least iPlayer was. Just no graphic.
So I agree, something’s wrong.

Let us know if they are normal after your unit has been powered on for a while.
Looks like the on-demand and Showcase stuff does not like not having a network connection.

InactiveRepassac – see my edit. The player icons are functional (I’ve now tried them all). OnDemand populates, but the graphics are missing, Gone AWOL from a cache when the box was unplugged, perhaps. First experiment, I switched off but did not unplug.

Mine’s the same, first time I have any issues. Been on for two hours now.
Also missing epg icons.
Can you try the following.
Enter On Demand without pressing OK, select the few blank thumbnails no way of telling what you have selected.
Press OK now enter On Demand blank thumbnails now identified by info message.
All functions appear to be working OK though.
My box hasn’t been unpowered since first boot and having to re-connect but has been in sby for a while until a re-boot when a timed recording was underway.
