InactiveQuote:Thank you all for your input. I think John Lewis is the place I’ll buy it, and they also give you several weeks to return it, if you’re not satisfied. In my experience, John Lewis seem less generous about returns than in the past. Their policy states:
It’s important that any unwanted item, unless faulty, is returned in a re-saleable condition. We’d expect this to mean that you’ve kept all original packaging and labels, and that it’s undamaged and unused.
I don’t want to return a PVR unused. How can I find out any problems, except by using it?
I’d rather rely on the statutory rights, and check it out fast to return it in seven days.

InactiveFaust…That’s interesting…I also have a NAS (Qnap) it contains all my music, photos and videos. Whether or not they’ll play through the Humax, we’ll have to wait and see. It won’t bother me if it doesn’t, as I use the NAS for streaming my music to my Naim music system.

InactiveJamesB…Unlike TVs, I am yet to find a store that has a Humax Freesat STB actually connected up and working. So you can see the EPG working and decide whether or not you like it. You can go to Most stores and see various TVs working, then at least you can decide if you like the picture…and also discover whether or not the remote is a bit dodgy!
if anyone knows of a store that has Humax Freesat STBs up and running, please tell me. I know for a fact that John Lewis, Currys etc do not.

InactiveI agree that would be nice, but I doubt if you’ll find one.
Anyway, it’s actually better, IMO, to have the chance to play around with it in the context in which you want to use it.

I have the Synology, both good units and both more than capable. As I say it plays most things I throw at it. I don’t use it for DLNA like I used to as our SMART tv is a tad more convenient and it can play everything from our HWT120 located in another part of the house. The Hummy can sometimes struggle playing things from the Panasonic, not so our Panasonic TV.

InactiveJohn Lewis have the new FreeTime Panasonic TVs on display, I believe. That would at least let you see the EPG, as it’s the same on the FreeTime sat boxes.

Excellent suggestion – I hadn’t thought of it.

ModeratorWhilst the Panasonic freetime TV is a good suggestion the EPG can be pitifully slow to display, and jump forward/back etc comparing to a freesat unit. It will give you an idea of what it looks like though.

InactiveThank you.
When I visited John Lewis in Peterborough, they told me that the reason that don’t show any Freesat boxes set up, is because they don’t have a dish. And to get a dish feeding loads of TVs and Freesat boxes, would cost them a fortune. They also suggested that they’d need a special licence. How true that is, I don’t know. I did suggest the Panasonic, but again they said nothing was set up.
They are not doing themselves, or Freesat any favours. If the Humax boxes, and the Panasonic TVs were all up and running, I’m sure their sales figures would shoot up!

The low power standby on Sky boxes is pretty useless. Scheduled recordings don’t work in this mode and it takes about 5 minutes for the box to boot up.
Sorry I forgot to reply…My Sky box takes 2-3 seconds to boot up from amber light to green. Or, was the box not really in a standby mode in the first place? The box is about 5 years old.
In the Freesat video, the very nice young lady, walks into the room and hits the standby button of the Humax remote control, which then boots up almost immediately! Is this really the case?

Yep correct, your sky box was never really in standby and from what I’ve read elewhere it uses around 19watts in standby.
The HDR1000/1010s takes around 35 seconds to get to the point where your able to change channel or navigate menus.

And uses the normal required < 0.5W standby.
