InactiveFuppes as an add on service to NAS4Free (fork of Freenas storage software). I’ve not configured it specifically to transcode but who knows what it does out of the box.
Ranger – my home media has all been produced on MAC (iMovie and FCPX). No sound issues as yet.

Inactivedannyboy1121 – How many mp3 files do you have ?
Last time I tried the dlna client it took ages to populate the file list and then it only listed a fraction of the 8000+ mp3 files I’ve got

Old Sky+HD boxes have no real value. It’s pity they can’t be patched to record without a subscription like the Sky+SD boxes.

Yes, that’s essentially the problem I found with it. I have 30k+ tracks on my NAS…
1)Took ages to populate the list and each and every time it came up with a different total of the number of tracks.
2)Would not play the occasional mp3 file.
3)After playing a track and then moving back a level in the structure it started a complete renewal of the list (see (1) above).
I have three media players which handle the same structure with ease. Add to that it will not play my AVI files and cannot display many of my JPEGs, I no longer use the media client on the 1000S.

InactiveA media client and a DLNA client are very different in their requirements and functionality, that said the enumeration of a folder does have a problem it seems.

Semantics. You can call it what you like, but the average user just expects it to work. I have 3 other media players plus 4 smart TVs, so 8 clients in all. One out of 8 not working suggests a very poorly written client.

Inactive“I have 3 other media players ..”.
You are not comparing like with like. The Digital Living Network Alliance has precise specifications for each DLNA class of device.
A DLNA video client, for example, is only required to play MPEG-2 – the server being expected to convert other formats (unless the client tells it that it supports them).
However I do agree the client has faults, for example,
– Not offering a choice of audio track where more than one is present.
– Errors in enumeration of a folder.

InactiveHumax 1000S spec, from the Humax site…
“Home Networking
Gather all your media and stream it anywhere at home.
Play back a wide range of audio and video content from compatible devices in your home network.
Play media files
Stream videos, music, and photos from your USB drive, network drive, and any PC or Mac computer in your home. Our media library collects the content from all the drives, so finding the perfect video, song, or photo to view is easier than ever.”
Where’s the bit about the server, and the client being restricted by DLNA spec?

Inactive“from compatible devices”.

InactiveI gave up on it when I discovered there was one choice for audio tracks and that was the first one. I find it dysfunctional but also adequate for the very basics, so I doubt Humax are ever going to
fix itmake it more compatible with other devices.August 5, 2014 at 8:42 am #53657Anonymous

“from compatible devices”.
Rubbish. Only a determined Humax defender, determined to defend Humax at all costs, would read it that way. Given your history in this respect forgive me if I’m suspecting that you’re an ex-Humax employee or closely associated with it in the past.

InactiveNo never worked for them but have worked in a similar industry for a major multi-national. It is just I do know what is required of a DLNA client.
The advertising you quoted is recent and is a little overstated, pity it has no links to the technical spec which is what they previously advertised.
My main interest in the units features would be for the DLNA server)
For someone who said “I’ve essentially given up on this box” you still seem to have a lot of input. In any case given our positions I don’t think anything would be gained by continuing this discussion.

I concur – and as the OP has now actually bought a unit, thread closed.
