InactiveGraham, older “HD ready” tv’s didn’t all support 1080i. My old Sony (before I got the LG) being a prime example but I can’t for the life of me remember the model number. It was however, around ten years ago, at the time their top of the range HD ready TV but was 1366×768 and would do exactly as the OP is experiencing whenever I tried to view 1080i.

1080i support was mandated in the original HD Ready spec. That doesn’t mean you have 1:1 source pixel to display. A 1920 x 1080 16:9 display. The usual 1366 x 768 display has rectangular pixels wider than high. (so called anamorphic).
You still get a full screen picture though not of course with 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Look at the table here. I had a 47″ Sony with such a spec that worked just fine with the Foxsat-HDR I still have. In fact a friend is still using the TV.
As all satellite transmissions have always been 1080i you would not have been able to view them at all. The original BBC-HD test transmissions were very high bitrate 1920 x 1440 pixels. It’s only relatively recently that all HD satelite sources are now 1080i 1920 x 1080 rather than 1080 x 1440.
There must have been something wrong with your setup Some boxes had a source option that simply passed the 1080i source as is, leaving the TV to scale where requred. Your TV should have simply rescaled a 1080i source to 1366 x 768 pixels.
