    HI,

    Thanks for your help so far. If I run Humaxcheck I get the following:

    humaxcheck version 0.1W (c) xyz321

    Writes to the Humax disk are disabled

    Partition table: Permission denied

    I assume you ran it with administrative privileges? It would need xyz321 to tell us exactly what that message implies. I would be tempted to use CrystalDiskInfo to see if you can retrieve the SMART data which would give us a clearer idea of the state of the hard drive. As you appear to be at a dead end the last thing to try would be humaxcheck 1: -p -w

    Hi,

    Yes, I was running in administrator mode.

    I tried humaxcheck 1: -p -w and all I got was Partition scan: permission denied. I also downloaded and installed CrystalDiskInfo and it recognises the C: drive but nothing else.

    I also tried Asoftech Data Recovery – no idea if it is any good or not, it came up in a Google search when I was researching problems with the harddrive. It only sees the C: drive.

    Any other suggestions? Does this mean the drive is completely dead?

    I also tried all the tools reviewed on this website https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/the-best-free-file-recovery-software

    with no success – didn’t expect much really but worth a try I thought. None of them even acknowledged that the drive was there.

    The filing system is different to Windows, so it won’t be recognised.

    Just don’t initialise/format it with windows, or it’s asta la vista with your files.

    No it isn’t; it damages the partition table but it can be repaired.

    Hi,

    As I mentioned at the start, when the drive was mounted in The Humax I could hear it running, yet when it is sitting on the bench connected via the USB to SATA lead I hear or feel nothing when I type the DOS commands. I would have at least expected to hear or feel it spinning.

    Is it worth trying one of these “promise the earth” data recovery companies?

    Sorry missed that and yes you should definitely be able to feel it spinning. Does the USB to SATA lead have a 12V output? A lot of them are designed for 2.5″ drives and SSDs which only need 5V.

    Is it worth trying one of these “promise the earth” data recovery companies?

    Depends how important the programmes are to you; they certainly won’t be cheap and I would be a bit surprised if they have much expertise in the proprietary Humax file system.

    which doesn’t have a separate lead to the power connector only the large databus connector.

    The clue is in the description; it says it is for 2.5″ drives. What you want is something like this Link to ebay which has an external 12V supply and will work with both 2.5″ and 3.5″ drives.

    Thanks, I borrowed the lead, it may not have been the one in the picture, but having done some research I can see that I do indeed need the external power supply and am about to order the one you highlighted.

    Hopefully that will resolve the problems I’ve been having.

    Hi,

    I purchased a USB to SATA interface with external power supply and I can now read the files on the old drive. I copied these to my win 10 PC using humaxrw 1: b and then connected up the new SATA drive and copied over the files using humaxrw 1: -p *ts. I got a warning that this may corrupt the hard drive but I decided to continue. All the files copied over and when I do a humaxrw 1: -l i can see the 4 files already recorded on the new drive plus the 31 rescued files copied over. However when I return the new SATA drive to the humax there is no sign of any recorded files/programmes.

    On the old SATA drive I got this output from humaxcheck 1: -l

    Can I just check that you have copied over both the .ts files and the supporting files for each recording?

    To add to what Martin has said you need at least the .hre files corresponding to your recovered files. If these were not copied to your PC when downloading the files from the original drive then you will have to recreate them using ts2hrw.
