The inital info I found re ST1000VM002 said it was a SATA II i.e.3Gb/s or 1.5Gb/s, this was incorrect. As you say it is in fact SATA III, wasn’t able to discover how or if it can be reduced to 1.5Gb/s

My original Seagate drive was an ST3320311CS 320GB 4 pins and no jumper as per NikRavo. This I replaced with a used WD10EURX + jumper.

Hopefully NikRavo will come back with more info.

So the upshot is I’ve bought another Foxsat; 500gb to accommodate the ‘Wives of …’! and the odd proper programme.

Having bought a SATA to USB adaptor, the original 320gb HDD did not register. The 100gb from CEX did and I formatted it to exFAT however on installing it the HDD not available warning came up and the menus were not available. I then formatted and partitioned it to Ext2 using EaseUS Partitian Master but again no change on installing it.

At this point I thought s*d it, bought a Seagate 320gb HDD as per the original which checked out as being good. On taking out the 100gb HDD, it was extremely hot and on checking it did not register using the SATA adaptor. The machine did not acknowledge the ‘new’ 320gb HDD, leading me to deduce that the issue is the machine which has seemingly fried two HDD’s.

Having quickly, removed the second 320gb HDD, it is still good so I can list it.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

A Foxsat actively causing disks to fail is not a problem I’ve read about before. Excess heat suggests a problem with the power being supplied to the disk – perhaps overvoltage.

In general, power supply problems are relatively common and it may be possible for a technician to diagnose the SATA power connection using a dummy load and quote for repair.
