I have used a spare I/R cable to plug in to the optical output at the back and taped it onto the underside so it is visible from where I sit.

I have recently acquired an FVP-5000t and am sometimes stymied by not being able to see the lights from where I sit – I wonder if you (or anyone else) could be so kind as to show me, step by step, how to do the above, including exact cable to buy?
Whatever were they thinking?

InactiveThe cable the previous poster (4 years ago) is describing is a digital audio optical cable that uses light to carry the sound to another device. In their case they were attaching the cable to the optical out at the back of the 5000T
and not connecting it to another device but routing it under the 5000T with the open end of the cable showing.
When the 5000T is on you will see the light at the end of the cable, when off you will not.
The 5000Ts LEDs are very difficult to see, you may want to try placing something with a reflective surface under the LED of the 5000T, perhaps tinfoil, glass or a thin metal strip and see if that improves things.
When in stand by the LED should be Red, when on Blue and when recording Purple a mixture of the Blue and Red LEDS.

Sorry, I meant to include in my question “after all this time” but it got lost when rearranging for clarity.
I have not been able to get a “reflector” to work, hence considering this cable option. Should both ends light up when the box is on, even tho’ only one end of the cable is connected?
Would this little cheapo suffice? I don’t want lots of spare length.
Many thanks.

InactiveThe optical output should always be on when the box is on, you can without a cable attached pop the little optical
out cover in gently and you will see the light. If you then connect a cable to the output you will see the unconnected end is illuminated.
Yes the cable will do the job, any short, cheap digital optical cable will do for this purpose.
You could try raising the 5000T up on two to three coins or similar under each corner, this should allow the LEDS which are under the box to spread, adding a white piece of paper or some tin foil may also help.

InactiveThank you, @VitaminD – my FVP’s light is very hard to see, even close up – I’m thinking I can dangle a cable so that the lit end hangs very close to an LED clock already there, thus not causing a distraction but easy to identify.
I mustn’t post it here (sez she!) but now I need to find out why the FVP’s remote powers up ‘n down my Samsung TV, and why its “east” navigation button switches on my Dyson fan, even tho’ it’s at right-angles to the direction pointed.

InactiveFor visibility of the lights, I have a small strip of white card placed just below and the lights shine onto it. I also have the box lifted slightly at the front.

What a stalwart of the PVR forums Graham was!

InactiveAs your 5000T is second hand it may well have been set up so the remote control will operate certain functions of the TV it was previously connected to. And it may be just that it was previously connected to a Samsung TV.
It is quite a good idea to have the devices paired in this way as common functions, on/ off, volume etc can be controlled by one remote rather than scrabbling about between remotes.
This subject is covered under Universal Remote Control page 34 of the manual which you can download from here.
https://uk.humaxdigital.com/support/
Go to Category and select Set Top Boxes, and under Product select FVP-5000T and
click on User Manuals.
The other thing you mention of the 5000T remote operating functions on another device is something that occasionally happens when so many devices use infra red remote controls.
My Audiolab amplifier remote controls functions on my Marantz AV and vice versa.
This can sometimes be eliminated by changing the code for the remote control under Box Assigning. Unfortunately my very old Audiolab and slightly less old Marantz don’t have this feature so a hand shielding one remote from the opposite device solves that.
From memory I don’t think the the 5000T has the Box Assigning feature, the Humax Aura which I also have does so I needed to change the remote controls code under Box Assigning in the Aura to stop both remotes from controlling both boxes.
Have a look at the instructions for the Dyson fan and see if it has this function and perhaps changing the code for the Dyson may stop the 5000Ts remote from operating the fan.

plugging an optical cable into the optical out will only show you if the unit is powered from a wall socket, ie it will still be red for a while after the unit is put into standby mode, (but appears to go off after about 2 minutes), and won’t change colour if recording etc – so a poor indicator of what state the box is in, it’s an unbelievably poor design choice to not have some frontal state indication.
Do any other 5000 owners have the problem of very slow power ons, which only correct themselves after a wall switch off, as well as the thing powering off once when using the youtube app after standby
ie power on from standby with remote
select youtube app, it powers off every single time
repeat sequence again, and it works, so it takes about 4 minutes to get into youtube from standby.

(Heaven knows if I’ve extracted the right bit above…)
Oh dear. Well, I found a toslink cable that came with some other gadget lord-knows-when, and couldn’t even plug it in – so am quite relieved that it would be a waste of time. It’s just being able to see if it’s On that I’d like to see.
Mine comes on randomly out of the blue – it turned itself (and my TV) on at 15:21 this afternoon 😯 Earlier it had been unresponsive to the Power On button on the remote

My HDR-Fox T2 used to be slow to turn on but that was because it was on power saving.

should be straightforward .. the flat side of the spdif goes to the top, if the cable has a cap remove it first. The random power ups tend to happen in the middle of the night for me, often a sign of update checks or talking back to the mothership on other equipment.
Everything is a bit iffy regarding power ons, the remote button sometimes needs a few goes to work, the stb power on button is similar, it’s all software nowadays, in the past you’d switch stuff on, and a second later it’s on, no more it seems. I power off at wall often as a result of these glitches
same with my samsung tv, takes forever to turn on, have to reseat the batteries in the remote on a regular basis because the standby button doesn’t work, and the front led is so small, can’t see it in daylight.
