When I was deciding on the type of recorder to buy, I contacted Humax re avoiding non-recording of set programmes – the Sony was quite unreliable in that respect, as well as crashing frequently.

Humax Support suggested that you have Power Management off. Here is part of the reply I received from them: “The tuners in the units are no more reliable over another, they all operate in the same way. Usually the majority of failed recordings are due to lack of power (Unit hasn’t started in time) and loss of signal. The power issue can be resolved by preventing a low power energy setting being turned on during the setup. Signal issues are then things outside of a PVR that we may or may not be able to resolve”

(You can also go back to the Power Management settings at any time and change them). Hope this helps.

Now that I’ve had the unit for a while, I am more convinced that there should be a means of using new folders of our own choosing.

On a 500 unit, if you get near the limit then you probably can’t remember what recordings you have down at the bottom of the list. I’d really like to be able to have a folder of my stuff, another for the wife’s selections, one for films etc etc.

It would be twice as bad for a 1000 unit.

I am requesting Humax to provide this facility as well as automatically going to the oldest programme in a series rather than the latest. Can anyone else please also send a message to Humax support – the more that ask the more likely that they may do something.

Here’s my three-month review. So far the only programmes that have intermittently not recorded are ITV London regional news and BBC Weather for the Week Ahead. I’m wondering whether the programme code or whatever it’s called is changed, because the recording will miss a day or two, then continue recording as part of the series. As for lack of folders for recordings, I agree everyone should urge Humax to add this to the wishlist. I also agree that adding to a recording schedule is longwinded, but if you can find the programme via the Guide, it’s easier to set it for record. I reiterate that the machine is slow to react, but be patient and you’ll get there. If it doesn’t, hit the X button and start again. Finally, my overall comment is once you get used to it, this is a great recorder with fabulous functionality – no more casting for Netflix, On Demand etc. And a good picture. Interesting to anticipate my one-year review!

I’ve “upgraded” from a Fox-T2, and I have to say, the 4000T is a massive backwards jump in usability.

No skip forward/backward for ads[/*]

Defaults to last recording in a series[/*]

No custom folders (i’m used to having one called “Films”, for instance [/*]
Can’t wait for the warranty to be up and see if anyone has some better software.

There is a skip forward/backward function I use it constantly to skip the adverts.

Just press OK or Play to display the time bar then press the forward > or back < buttons on the wheel to skip the amount of time you have previously chosen in Settings> PVR Settings > Playback Options.

Defaulting to the last recording is an irritation, (as is defaulting to ‘Watch Live TV’ when you want to start watching a programme still recording,) but pressing the CH up button once or twice will quickly take you to the first in the series.

I have never had folders so I don’t ‘miss’ them, but with 360+ recordings on my 4000T I would very much like to have them :)

Check the signal strength of those channels in your FVP settings, it might just need an Ariel tweek. I personally don’t have a slow machine, after 24 years cable and 6 years with a TiVo, that is what is defined as painfully slooooow, I can assure you. Lastly, if you want to consciously watch a film/ prog that you have recorded a while back. Play it just a couple of seconds and stop. It will then always be in your “recent” folder regardless of how many things you record. Also anything you partly watch and switch off however far down your recording list will, again, be in your “recent” list
