    i) Is switching the box off and on at the mains to reset it liable to cause a problem with the hard drive/disk? Is it less/more likely if this ‘hard’ reset is done just after startup/when not recording anything?

Never a good idea to remove power while the disc is in action.

ii) How is it possible that this is a FreeSat, not a Humax, problem – if that was the case, wouldn’t everyone’s sets be affected, not just some?

Can you explain your reasoning? Why do you think a problem affecting only some boxes would be more likely to be a problem with the Humax code? To me it seems that Freesat’s constant interaction with the boxes is likely to allow more opportunity for things to go unexpectedly wrong.

    Thanks for the replies chaps.

I suppose my assumption – which sounds like it is probably ill-founded!!! – was that a problem occurring on some units but not others is likely a ‘build’/production issue with the boxes that are throwing hissy-fits. But I’ll happily admit that I don’t know enough about the relationship between the FreeSat and Humax kit, software, signal etc to have any sort of expert opinion, so I’m happy to accept that you’re right on this. I’m just trying to work out what to do to resolve the problem!!! I honestly don’t have any axe to grind with Humax…

It still leaves the question of what to do. I’ve arranged to get a new box from Richer Sounds, and then I’ll see how that goes. But if the problems continue – and if switching the box off at the mains is likely eventually to damage the unit – then I really don’t know what the way forward is.

    Cheers,

    Jay.

They are not all like this, my HDR1000S which is only about one month old, apart from missing the end of the odd programme, which is probably the broadcaster’s fault, works perfectly from the satellite dish and the internet and mine is a slow internet connection, being out in the countryside, about 3 to 4 meg and still works perfectly for catch up etc.

    So definitely, try another box.

The majority don’t have any problem at all, those that have had it, most work perfectly after a power cycle and the problem does not reoccur.

This seems to rule out a hardware issue.

REPASSAC, do you think it could be related to the satellite dish, leads, connections etc? Just wondering. Or do you think it’s more likely to do with signal issues in different areas? Or…any other suggestions?

Yes. And some of those reporting the problem had had the box for months or longer. Unlikely that a hardware problem would suddenly manifest itself on a mix of old and new boxes.

Switching off at the mains won’t damage anything as long as you’re careful to do it only when the disc is not busy.

Have you tried the Humax advice quoted by Diesel in an earlier post in this thread? Here is a re-quote.

    Quote:
Please find the instructions below to reset your box.

Following these instructions will reset some system settings including your Recording Schedule (Please replace when complete to ensure you still record favourite programmes)

Any previous recorded programmes will be saved.

    1. Press Settings or Home on your remote.

    2. Move to Settings > System Settings and press OK.

    3. Move to Factory Default and press OK.

    4. Reset System will be highlighted, press OK.

    5. It will ask you if you are sure, highlight Yes and press OK.

    6. It will then ask for your password, default is 0000

    7. The box will then reset itself. You will then need to go through the initial setup again.

Once reset, you will need to leave the unit on BBC 1 HD for roughly 30 minutes.

I did James, yes, but thanks for asking. After doing it the unit was okay for a couple of days.

I would get a new box from Richer Sounds, make sure it is the latest one with TV and STB on the remote control, look at the software, make sure it is November 2014 and if it does it again, factory reset and try a different postcode, mine is in Leicestershire, LE8 and I have no problems, if it still does it, look at your internet connection, has it got an ip address, make sure no duplicate ip address on your network, is your router set to DHCP, all the usual stuff. How have you got your internet connected, cable straight from the router or over power-line adapters, are they OK. If its looking on the internet and getting a poor connection, that might make it a bit busier than it should be, maybe.

If it works without the internet OK, then your answer has got to be your network connection.

Then I would suggest doing it one more time, and if/when the problem recurs, ring Humax Support before taking any other actions. Tell them you’ve taken the steps recommended by Humax, yet the box has just locked up. Possibly they might be able to talk you through what to try next, to narrow down exactly what’s causing the lockups in your particular case.

James, I rang Humax initially, and their help desk person really wasn’t much use. He simply said it wasn’t a Humax issue, and rubbished the advice posted on here until I’d explained to him that it was a direct quote from Humax that had been re-posted on the forum. Then he agreed it was worth trying, which I did…

As per Ozzy’s suggestion, I’m going to take the box back to Richer Sounds and swap it for a new one, then see how it goes. I talked to them earlier today and they’re going to phone me when they get some new boxes in later in the week. Richer Sounds have been very helpful.

Good luck. Be interested to hear if another box behaves differently. If so, it might suggest that this locking-up problem might involve corruption which isn’t always cleared by a reset. Speculating.

Jay, just ‘how soon after switch on’ does this unresponsive problem occur?

    Hi Barry,

First time (last week) it was just after switching on (from Standby). Today it was just after switching on, and getting as far as selecting ‘recordings’ on the menu…
