InactiveI am surprised that your Samsung TV can not adjust at all. I previously had a Samsung TV which could adjust the channel 4 HDMI input although not as ideally as my present Sony TV. Which model is your Samsung TV?

You mean it is an older programme shot in 4:3 ratio and intended to be viewed in 4:3 ratio?

As I recall, 4:3 programmes are output as 16:9 Letterbox by YouView. Hence might well be beyond the capacity of the OP’s Samsung to adjust.
Edit. Not letterbox – the 4:6 picture is centred in a 16:9 black surround. What’s that called?

InactiveWhat options do you get if you cycle through the TV set’s aspect ratio settings?
One option is to watch such programmes over a SCART lead connection.
(4:3 in a 16:9 frame is called pillarbox.

InactiveThanks but then you lose the picture quality but also a nuisance to have to keep changing over or can you use both at the same time.As this has to go back anyway I was told by Humax that this problem could be overcome by buying the freesat freetime 1 tb.I don’t want to part with my hard earned money if that’s incorrect. Can I say a big thank you to everyone for your help Mary

I’m surprised Humax suggested a Freesat box. You would think they’d point you towards the HDR-2000T, which is their current Freeview model. Assuming the HDR-2000T has the picture adjustment options you’re looking for, that is.

InactiveMary, please would you give a couple of different examples of a specific programme and the channel that it is broadcast on where the aspect ratio is not ideal.
