New transmission on 10964 H using 22000 SR and FEC 5/6 normally reserved for HD channels. This transponder has space created by deletion of Channel 5 regional SD variants.

Would be good timing for the World’s Strongest Man or even the SA test highlights?

If this were true freesat will become the better free to air proposition.

looks like a channel is now broadcasting on the capacity, encrypted, like the UKTV launch. interesting

C5 HD? or Spike HD? :-)

more audience for C5 than Spike. If it was spike, that would go behind a pay wall. audience is so low it wouldn’t pay the fee to put the technicians light on to put in so many repeats…

There’s lots of scope for Spike content to improve, should Viacom wish to go down that road.

C5 HD is already behind a pay wall – no obvious reason for Viacom to want to change that, but again, it depends what their strategy is.

Then again – it’s been suggested elsewhere that they may just be cutting costs by moving C5 HD from Sky capacity to Viacom capacity. Which may be more likely than either Spike HD or a liberated C5 HD. I guess we’ll soon find out.

SD, HD, the bit rates are so poor it’s often difficult to tell the difference on most channels – with 5 it’s still the same tabloid content regardless.

There is information HERE that confirms C5 will go FTA some time this year.

Looking as if it’s finally going to happen.

I know this is something of an old issue. However, I don’t think having HD channels is a must for everyone. I do think its importance or otherwise to the consumer depends on a number of factors i.e. size of room, size of TV, distance the viewer is sitting from TV, quality of panel.

We have a reasonably large lounge and as a result the TV is approximately 12 to 13 feet away. From this distance I find SD even on a 47″ screen more than acceptable. In fact C5 is one of the better broadcasters for PQ, at least in our area that is. Our TVs audio is handled by a Sonos set up so again pretty good.

UHD is something different again and here one definitely can see a marked improvement.
