After a number of issues (some mentioned on this Forum) Humax has just replaced my box.
I backed up the recordings on the old box using FTP with FileZilla to copy over the network to my PC. That worked fine.
However they won’t copy back to the new box. Every single one of the 118 files gives an error, even though I can connect to the box and see any new recordings on it. An example is:-
Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,39,197,39).
Command: STOR New_ Gotham_ Wrath Of The Villains_20160509_2200.ts
Response: 550 New_ Gotham_ Wrath Of The Villains_20160509_2200.ts: Operation not permitted
Error: Critical file transfer error
I have tried all the available server settings on the box, including setting the FTP Server to On but to no avail.
What is going wrong here? Humax support told me it should be possible to recover the SD recordings (most are in SD) but not the HD due to encryption. They suggested I try a USB stick but that just displays a prompt to run the videos and then they won’t play anyway due to the video format.
Any help appreciated!

Have you converted them to something like mp4? That’s what I do for playing on a different device. Don’t forget you are not playing them back on the box they were recorded on.

All recordings, HD, sd and radio, are encrypted when made. The SD and radio recordings are sometimes decrypted on export e.g. expoting via USB or exporting via SAMBA from the “My Contents” folder.
Have you checked whether any of the FTP exported .ts files play on your PC using something like VLC of MPC-HC?

If the .ts files don’t play on your PC using VLC or MPC-HC (you only need try one of those) then it is NOT possible to recover.
That they can’t play from a USB drive connected to your replacement FVP-4000T with a format issue suggests that they are still encrypted, but have ago with VLC or MPC-HC and the .ts files just to make sure.

Thanks for responding.
No, I did not convert them. Nobody at Humax told me that I had to do that. They seem to be in a proprietary format with .htm, .nts and .ts extensions for each recording, and sometimes an additional .hjtsm file as well. The .ts is identified by Windows 7 as “MPEG-2 TS Video” but VLC won’t play it and it crashes Windows Media Player.

Reading the threads you sent the links to I can see that I have little chance now of recovering our recordings since the old box has gone back to Humax. From Windows 7 I did not see a “My Contents” folder. If I had known about that I would have used a Windows 10 machine.

Use something like Handbrake and you will be watching them by the time you have finished a brew. I have done lots and never had issues – that’s from the Humax 2000T but the format appears the same.

Martin is right. I just tried Handbrake and it doesn’t handle encrypted video.

How rude you are Martin – I clearly hadn’t picked up on that, my mistake. However, manners don’t appear to be your strong point – sadly.
I have never used FTP always relying on USB instead -comprendi?

I don’t have the box but having read the threads about it, it’s pretty clear copying files directly from the box to a PC without using USB works the same as your Freeview+ box (the content remains encrypted).
I can’t see the advantage of using FTP given the restrictions. At the end of the day copying to USB is simple and negates all these difficulties.
When you have over 100GB of files to copy off FTP is a very reliable protocol. You can leave it running all night and it will do the job safely.
The problem here was lack of information from Humax on how to do it correctly. If you use a Windows 7 machine (as I did) it does not see the root folder that allows you to transfer the files decrypted. It only sees the “Recordings” folder containing encrypted files. If you use a Windows 8 or 10 machine it does, apparently, see the correct folder and the FVP decrypts the files on copying. Had I known that I could easily have used a Windows 10 machine on my network but it is too late now as the original box has gone back to Humax.

Hi Andrew,
The only files that are encrypted are HD files, which you should not be able to transfer. The steps below are the only instructions we have for data transfer I’m afraid.
On your PC or Laptop follow the below to copy files off the Humax:
• Ensure both PC/Laptop and Humax box are on the same network
• Ensure both PC/Laptop have the relevant sharing options turned on ( File Share, SAMBA and FTP on the Humax)
• Open a new folder/file explorer tab on your PC/Laptop
• Type in the IP address of your Humax found in network connection status into the address bar – For example, \192.XXX.X.XXX
• Your PC/Laptop should access the internal HDD of the Humax and allow you to copy files off it (My content, Recordings)
• To play back a file, copy a file to your Desktop and right click to open with and select VLC player
To stream the media from the internal HDD of your Humax:
• Ensure both PC/Laptop and Humax box are on the same network
• Ensure both PC/Laptop have the relevant sharing options turned on (File Share, SAMBA and FTP on the Humax)
• Open a new folder/file explorer tab on your PC/Laptop
• Click on Network in the folder on your PC
• Select the FVP-4000T – for example, FVP-4000T DMS 192.XXX.X.XXX
• This should automatically load your default media player and playback the SD file you select
If the instructions above do not work, the first troubleshooting step would be to restart the Humax network server. Failing this try starting from fresh.
• Switch Humax, PC and internet off at the mains
• Restart your router and await until it fully reboots
• Switch your PC and Humax on
• Double check network functions work on both products
• Retry the instructions above
Please note that the above information may differ between different versions of Windows.

Which is exactly what I do with USB and my 2000T i.e. set it before retiring for the night. The following morning the files are there for my attention. As said, copying to USB is easy safe and reliable – whatever currently supported version of Windows or OS X you are using.
Sometimes the simply option is the safest option.
