Inactivebox will not accept more than 1 channel change, screen goes blank and only comes back after power if turned off then on again but, first channel change back to blank screen.
tv has Freeview facility which works fine.
remote has fresh batteries.
have tried the reboot as advised by Humax support (using 1GB USB), no joy.
does anyone have an answer or am I heading for a dealer repair ?

ParticipantA reset to factory defaults does not normally require a USB update.
If you can boot it to a single channel you can do it via the box menus.
Did you try this without being able to reset the box and as a result Humax provided a reset file using the USB port ?
This isn’t new software incidentally just a reset to factory defaults.
What happened when you tried to reset the box by usb ?
Did you use a freshly formatted stick with the xxx.hdf file on it ?
Did you try a different usb stick ?
Your OP is a tad confusing.

Try right clicking in windows and format it FAT32 and try again with only the single file on it.
What is the filename you had on the stick (including the file extension) ?

InactiveSame with me. All channels black screen. Power off and on. Not doing factory reset because I have too much stuff recorded I don’t want to lose.

At a guess you have hide known file extensions selected in windows explorer. Change the view options as per this link.
The file you have is a firmware upgrade but it’s likely to be a .zip archive with the actual update file (the one you need on the USB stick which is a file with a .hdf extension and a text .txt file with instructions. The .hdf file needs copying to a usb stick and ensure it’s called

A factory reset won’t wipe your recordings and should be the 2nd thing to try following a proper power on/off if there are problems and on the latest software, the schedule will be lost though so take a note with a camera phone or notepad or similar. What can cause problems is the re-tune if the dish is slightly mis-aligned, a quick read through this forum explains the problem in detail and solutions.
Out of interest which version of software are you using on this box?

Inactivetried again this morning,
ok for 2 channel changes, then blank screen…. as per…
had to revert to digi freeview.
am I now looking at a repair or is a new box the cheaper deal ?

InactiveIs the blank screen problem occur at random channels or do the channel numbers remain constant?
Did you manage to apply the reset file?
